Hi all. Im new to the forum. Looks like a fountain of knowledge here. Let me begin with what brought me here. Im always in the market for a good buy and something interesting. I came accross a Model 539 that looked as though it sat for 20 years. With some TLC I've uncovered a gun thats probably around 97%+. Their just isn't much info out there on it. For those who dont know it's an 8 shot, single stack 9mm. Safety, decocker,a follow up to the well known Model 39. As far as I can tell the only obvious differance are the rear sights. It was made between 1980-1983 with a production of anywhere from 1200-8300. Just cant find out. Shot it this weekend and Im just not used to the trigger pull yet. My fellow shooter next to me was familier with the Model 39, he was able to place shots dead center with one hand in single action at 25 yrds. Obviously operator error on my part! I'll get the feel the more I use it. Can anyone tell me why such a short run on this model? How many made? It's a beautiful piece and Im glad to have it. Thanks for your time. Mike.

A lucky find -treasure it. Why such a short run-it didn't sell. IIRC S&W was launching its
2nd Generation of semi-autos. There was the 439
with aluminum frame, the 539 with a steel frame and the stainless steel M639. Blue steel guns were starting to go out of fashion then, so the
539 and 559 just didn't sell.

Sgt Preston here. Welcome lemonsqueezer. The 539 is an excellent handgun & has been discussed many times in the recent past. You can retrieve all those discussions very simply by using the "FIND" feature at the top of the Smith & Wesson Semiauto Pistol page. Click on "FIND", type in 539 click "GO". Hope this helps. The 539 was really fine. I waited for a steel frame for a long time, found the 539 and had to have it. Then the thought "wonder if they will make stainless?". 6 months later - 639 and away goes the 539. THEN - I found out how many 539s they made. Still kick myself on a regular basis. But at least I kept my M13PC with the four barrel ports.... So, savor your find.
