s&w model 581

fairly new still to guns and s&w forum question i was looking for a gun for home protection at local gun show found model 581 with 4 in. barrle did not like grips has some black hodge grips want the original wood looking grips but need to know if this has a square or round grips could someone please tell me what i may need and the gun cost 370.00 dollars is that a good price the gun and barrle look shot very little slightly visible ring around cyl. also i found this forum looking for info. about s&w guns at the show the same person had a model 66 all stainless no dash and a 686 no dash with wood grips he said the one was around 40 yrs. old the other around 1980's and he purchased them both new but never fired them they have 4 in. bar. but i had to pay 1050.00 is that a good price . thank you

$370 for a nice 581 is a good price. It would have had square butt Magna stocks from the factory.

An early 66 and 686, both unfired; not a bad deal at a little over $1K. Did he have the original boxes and contents to go with them?

Ok, first, the M581 4", is a L frame square butt. K or L frame grips, square butt, will fit the model 581. The grips that came on it originally were the smaller grips, identified in the Standard Catalog of S&W as checkered walnut service stocks with medallions. You do not have to go original with the grips, there are many after market grips available. E-bay is a good source, Ahrends, Eagle, Altamont, amoung others that produce quality grips. If the gun is in good condition, you got it at a very good price.
Not knowing the condition of the other two guns, I cannot say anything about the value. If you could buy both guns for $1050, not a great deal, but I would be tempted if the guns were in good condition. The original grips would be a big plus for those guns. Hope that helped a little.
