Hi all, quick question for the educated people on the model 60. I need protection peace by me while im on the job and I was looking at the model 60. I'm not a big fan of the interlock that they have on some of their models but I can't seem to find out if this certain one comes with that interlock or not?

Product: Model 60

would appreciate any responses thanks!

Current production (new) Model 60s of all flavors and variants have the internal lock. Older Model 60s do not. I recommend you look for a used 60 without the lock (that's what I have). They are out there, usually in good condition. Hope this helps.

As 310Pilot stated, pre-internal lock Model 60's can be found used. The .38spl usually has a 1 7/8" barrel. The later versions were chambered in .357 Magnum and have a 2 1/8" barrel, just like the picture you linked to in your original post.

Depending on your exact needs, you may wish to consider a Model 642. This is a 5-shot, J-frame in .38spl with a 1 7/8" barrel and an aluminum alloy frame.

It is lighter than the Model 60 by about five ounces. This can be good and bad.

The Model 642 Pro is currently being produced without the internal lock. They usually go for around $400 I believe.

S&W has said that they plan to produce the Model 640 without the internal lock. However, no one has seen these yet as of this date.

The Model 640 is identical to the picture of the Model 60 you linked to, except for the fact that it has an internal hammer.

I'm sure this will start something, I hope not. I bought a new one with the "IL" several months ago, I don't know why people think it is the curse, it's a great gun, well finished and shoots well. Why pay almost the same for a used gun when you can buy new and know it's history. The "IL" "MIM" thing is way out of control, read up if you care to, a lot of internet stories out there, not all true. Nothing wrong with used, but...? for the same or more? Look outside for some other opinions.

In fact, for $50 more MSRP, you can get the 3" 60 Pro, SKU #178013. It's <1" longer, a whole .6 oz heavier, yet comes with a tritium Night Sight on the front, fully adjustable rear sight, target barrel, improved trigger, and some nice wood grips. Like the other 60's made recently, it has the internal lock. Most of my S&W's have that - and it has never been a problem on any of them.

You cannot go wrong with any of those discussed so far. Question: have you shot any of these? Personally, my .02, IMHO etc...I owned an alloy frame snub awhile back and did not care for it - it just didn't feel right to me.

Advantage of a used S&W - you'll probably always be able to get your $$ back out of it at the next gun show.

Advantage of a new S&W - you'll probably be able to get MOST of your $$ back out of it immediately and ALL of your $$ back out of it if you wait awhile.

Either way, with a S&W you really can't go wrong. That's probably not as likely with SOME of the other brands.
