If you haven’t needed to shoot it by now, you never will.
So I’d give it to a family member (preferably a youngster you teach to shoot it), if you have one. Or sell it to someone who collects virgin guns for top dollar then reinvest in something you will shoot.
I was about to agree with Jim, about selling it ANIB then buying a shooter, until it occurred to me how I would feel about doing that myself. You've had it 46 years, why would you want to part with it unfired? Personally, I'd find a special occasion to take it to the range, maybe with a particularly good friend or someone dear to me. I'd explain how long it's been and that I wanted to share the experience, then have at it. I'd take photos, make a memory, then at the end of the day, I'd clean it up, put it away, pour something worthy, and enjoy it with my boots on the deck railing. That's what I would do.
I bought the same revolver last year that had been sitting in the box, unfired since leaving the factory, for over 40 years. I now shoot it every week. It is the revolver I used to introduce my long suffering Girl Friend to the joy of target shooting. But that's me. You do you.
It will shoot just like any other 4" J frame .22 revolver, so if you have had that experience before I'd leave it unfired. But the idea of using it on a special occasion - birthday, the day you entered or left the Army, an anniversary of something meaningful to you, etc. - would be a great excuse...uh, reason.
I love to "shoot 'em if I've got 'em," but I've never owned one from new that long without shooting it so I don't know how I'd feel about shooting that one.
I am leaning toward paplinker's idea, though. Maybe take a bunch of those nice stainless ones you bought new and make a day of it.
One thing's for sure -- nobody will criticize your decision.
