Is the Model 66-1 with a 6 1/8" barrel really unusual? Does it deserve any sort of a premium? I'm speaking of a new in box example.

Bam Bam is correct! S&W barrel lengths are "Nominal", and will usually vary a bit from the nominal length, sometime by as much as +/-1/4", although +/- 1/8" is almost universally found to be the case. Your gun could be anywhere from 5 3/4" to 6 1/4" and is still a 6". This applies to all gun models! The exception is nominal 2" "Snub nose" model barrels, they are always very close to 1 7/8".

There was a time in '79 and early '80 when S&W made some of their barrels 1/8" longer so when fit it would still be above 4" or 6".
I believe this had to do with Canada or some country requiring a minimum barrel length. A barrel that started as 4" when fit and finished might be 3 7/8" (like previously stated) and would not be allowed.
Can't find any of the 6.125" Model 66 labels but here's a couple 4.125" Model 19 labels.

The very first variation listed under the Model 66 in the SCS&W (p.229 3rd, p.268 4th) states a small group made w/ 6 1/8".

According to SCSW (all editions) there should be a premium for the 6 1/8" barrel length Model 66. That is actually the source and reason for my curiosity. It isn't addressed as a tolerance issue.

It does say that; seems strange

Generally the shorter the barrel the more it brings....... 2 1/2" tend to bring the most $$$$$s,

Maybe ANIB with "Box and Docs" which show it as shipped as a 6 1/8"gun , it has some "collectors value" or as some have stated it's a Canada thing????? Like no military calibers in Mexico......
