i just bought the smith and wesson m&p15 .223
my question is what would be the recommended ammo to use, stamped on the barrel it says 5.56 nato. would it be better to use the standard .223 rems. i heard the nato causes to much pressure and in the long run could ruin the gun...

Congtrats on the new buy. Go into the M&P 15 long gun forum. There is a thread that explains the difference between the 5.56 and .223 ammo and the chambers. I'm too new to paraphrase the thread for you.

If the barrel is stamped 5.56 it is safe to shoot 5.56. The pressure is not a problem. The rifle will not wear out any faster.

Bottom line is the leade in a 5.56 chamber and the throat are longer. You can shoot .223 in 5.56, but not the other way around.

You will never ruin any gun by shooting the ammo that it is chambered for.
