A friend of mine just bought a S&W No. 1, First Issue, 6th variation, serial number 8546. It is nicely inscribed to "McClure Branham" who he has identified as a railroad executive in Indiana, 1817-1869. Unfortunately, all that he has is the frame, and the QUESTION IS, What about this steel frame? All info we can find tells us these pistols should have a brass frame. Are others with steel frames known?

Why does you friend think it's a Smith & Wesson frame? S&W frames are not marked and if it's steel, it's not a S&W frame, probably one of the copies made in England or Europe. Ed #15

Thank you for the reply. I think your comment that this is the frame of a "copy" is correct. My friend (who is in Hawaii) just sent me a scan of the frame, and the round inspection hole seems to be centered right above the spur trigger housing, whereas it should be a little more forward. I'll try to attach the scan.
