I came across a 1953 pre-27 3 1/2", perfect original grips, 100% case color on hammer and trigger. 100% blue but the barrel and cylinder are very slightly plum color. Could this be factory. Plus the grips are numbered to the gun, but are small non magnas checkered with silver medallions. By 1953 weren't all grips magnas?

spurs, don't know about the grips; however, most likely the 'plum' is legit. 'Plum' is the result of plain 'ol age; I've seen it many times on Colt SAAs vis-a-vis S&Ws. I don't know what $$range you are talking about but it sure interests me. Items from 50+ years ago often have some 'plum' and I've never seen it ever hurt the value of the weapon. Hope some S&W member can clarify the stock/grip issue for you. GR

Tell us the serial number with the last two as XX if you prefer.
Is there an S prefix?
Can you post pics of the grip number and the gun? Sometimes(fortunately rarely), one encounters grips an idiot has renumbered.

PLUM- it is very seldom seen in an original factory finish, but it can occur to some slight degree.

Yes, S serial, made 1953. I will try to get a picture. The grips are mint, but the small non magnas. Theought they were only made pre-war.

spurs....A former owner changed the stocks on your ".357" from the original Magna stocks to the service stocks made prior to WW II.

Plum color often indicates a revolver has been refinished. Plum color is not unheard of, just very seldom seen on S&Ws.

A big +1 on what Doc44 said. I have very rarely seen a S&W with original blue finish go plum, but I have seen numerous refinished guns do that…

Bill, notice where he says in the orig post: "Plus the grips are numbered to the gun, but are small non magnas checkered with silver medallions."

That is why I would like to see a pic of the grips, AND the number.
Perhaps someone has modified the orig magna grips to service style, OR renumbered some pre-war grips, as I mention above. It does sound puzzling.

Lee...I missed the part about the stocks being "numbered to the gun". I guess it is possible someone may have ordered the ".357" with service stocks and S&W fitted a pair of pre-WW II stocks they still had on hand in 1953. Stranger things have happened
