Before I get a letter from Roy Jinks, I thought I'd try to get an guestimate as to ballpark value on a pre 29 I just got. I can find nothing regarding any pre 29 in this configuration. It is nickled with a 8 3/8" barrel. 4 screw of course. I do plan to get the Jinks letter regardless. It's sure pretty though. Thanks for any feedback.

Folks here will want pictures to verify condition. Having the SN might help too. Any stamps under the grips indicating re-work at S&W. Still have the original "coke" stocks? Box and tools? Lots of variables; value can be anywhere between $1000 and $4000. I looked at a nickel four inch 4 screw last week, asking price was $750 and way too high at that. That's how bad they can be. Lets see pictures of yours?

Just a few quick comments. First, the stocks on the gun are NOT coke bottle. Second, 8 3/8" pre-29s are fairly rare and a nickel-plated 8 3/8" pre-29 extremely rare. You will need the factory letter to get most of us to believe the gun is righteous.

Good Luck.

Others will be able to say more I'm sure but one thing I can confirm is those stocks are not "cokes" so you don't have the original stocks. Looks like original finish but can't tell for sure from the pictures. Box? Tools? Stamps on butt under the stocks?

Based on the type of ampersand on the left side of the barrel (although the photo could be misleading), the barrel dates to around 1971 or 1972 and is a replacement for the original. The windage adjustment screw on the rear sight appears to be crowned, but should have a flat head. This suggests the white outline was replaced to accommodate the longer barrel.

I only know of one 44 Magnum in the S177000 range that letters with an 8 3/8-inch barrel. It has serial number S177349 and was shipped on August 17, 1959 with a bright blue finish. Generally speaking, 44 Magnums without a model number and fitted with an 8 3/8-inch barrel are quite rare.
