$869.00 list price for a new model 63 w/3" barrel. I know dealers discount the firearm but does anyone else think this is somewhat on the high end for a 22LR? Prices are really out of sight no matter if used or new!

I suspect the manufacturing costs are similar irrespective of caliber.

All gun manufacturers have had annual price increase over the past 4 years averaging 5-7%.

Example: Purchased "S&W 460v" in 2007 for $895. 2009 price was $1007...+12.5% increase in 2 years.

2010 price...???

With the Klinton lock,Saf-t company taking over S&W and Liars,I mean lawyers taking all the monies for court battles for and against gun manufactors, I can really see why. But,These prices are outragesly too high for me. I can get Rugers way cheaper. rz625-8

and if you shop around you can get a used 63 for half that with no lock !
i havnt bought a NIB S&W if 10+ years.

I suspect the dealer is paying between 35 & 40% off MSRP depending on what distributor they are buying from. Then the dealer has to pay shipping to bring it into their shop.

I haven't seen a used Model 63 without lock for under $450 in a number of years.

Yes, others have mentioned Ruger. The handguns I own are all S&W. I really would like to stay with Smith but it may not be possible. I haven't seen a used 63, 617,34 or any 22LR for sale around here for quite some time. I guess I will have to keep my eyes open and my wallet ready!

My dealer showed me his cost on that gun, and it was well over $500. Throw in shipping and at least some profit for him and it gets high real fast.

Yeah, they're high. Especially when you consider that the tooling and development costs were amortized a long time ago, but considering inflation, the real cost might be cheaper now than they used to be.

Example: I bought my model 17 in 1977 for ~$200. At the time, $200 would buy ~400 gallons of gas. How many gallons of gas is the equivalent of a new M17 today?

Don't know the cost of the current mod 17, but 400 gal of gas today would amount to $1140 at $2.85 p/gal. I doubt if a current mod 17 (if available) would be more than $700. Keep in mind the MSRP is very seldom the selling price.

was in my dealers place yesterday and he was hot. Seems his dist. called and told him that a few 17's had just come in. As he had put a order in over 6 months ago he said he would take all the dist. had. When told his cost would be $800.00 each shiped he said no thanks.

That's why I buy used S&W revolvers instead of new ones. The used 22 caliber revolvers are a hot item in todays market and they aren't cheap but if you shop hard you a decent one for $450 and a really nice one for $550. I bought a 17-4 with 6 inch barrel and a 18-4 with 4 inch barrel both in 97% condition for $550 each out the door last week at a gun show.

I guess the search is on in earnest for a used .22. $600.00 dealer cost! Forget about it.

just found a no lock 63 4 incher for $550 on consignment here in PRK, where the FFL takes 20% of the sale price. they may come down $25 or $50, its been there a while. some shops are nicer about calling the seller to see if they will take a lower price than others. think i should jump on it ?
