s&w repairs on 15-22

I picked up 2 of these rifles at Cabela's about a month ago and fired them for the first time today. I couldn't wait until Christmas so we had a slightly early Christmas gift. Hey, the wife got a puppy so I had to get out a toy for me.

The other rifle with a serial # in the DTH2XXX range was able to fire about 6 times before if would catch each shell either in the ejection port or jammed inside. It was obvious before the gun was fired it would have this problem as the ejector was right against the side when looking at it through the magazine cavity. Only shot about 20 shells through the gun.

Very nice and fun guns. Unfortunately the one has to be sent back. I'm hoping to get it back soon and that they are still offering the 2 free magazines for the trouble.

Look forward to shooting these a lot.

Tweak the ejector yourself. The extractor problem seems to be the worst issue with these. Mine shed the extractor while shooting, made the trip to S&W, and came back yesterday. With an extractor.

Merry Christmas and congrats on the new puppy and TWO 15-22s. Life is great. :D

As Chuck mentioned, the ejector fix is a simple tweak with a screwdriver or needle nose pliars.

It would be great if you could take a picture of the two guns side by side to show the difference in position of the ejectors.

Anyway you go, at least you have a backup. Backups are good. ;)

There's a great video on Youtube showing the extractor fix. I got my MP15-22 about a week ago and had the same problem with rounds FTE about every other one. I was a little nervous about fixing it myself as I had read about it, but reading is one thing and seeing is another. Once I saw the fix, I got my needle nose pliers out and performed the fix. No more FTE's at this point. There is also a video on Youtube showing the jamming problem before and after the fix. Really good stuff. By the way...I love this little rifle. I have a GSG-5 and man, did it have problems. The plastic is very cheap also, not like the polymer on the MP15-22 and I didn't like the take down. I love the fact that this rifle takes down exactly like my M-16 did...it feels like I alreday know this gun. Great job S&W. Every new gun seems to have their problems and I see the extractor problem to be a minor one. I'm sure that it has been fixed on the newest lot. I would highly recommend this gun as compared to all the other black guns out there. I have examined all of them at gun shows and found the S&W to be exactly what I have been looking for. Plus, I have always thought that S&W was a great company with excellent guns. Get one and have some fun!

The Youtube video is the ejector fix! Eee-Jeck-Tor. :)

Doesn't help a bit if the extractor goes missing like mind did after 400 rounds.

Anyway, mine came back Christmas Eve and I fired 294 rounds thru her yesterday. No problems other than the six failures to feed which I attribute to the magazines for now. Five cleared with Tap, Rack, and Roll. One had the cartridge standing at attention in the lips.

The extractor remained in the bolt during all this firing. But it did the first weekend too. We'll see.

Standard stoppage clearing drill for pistols and the AR15.

Tap the bottom of the magazine to ensure it's inserted all the way. (A mag not latched will have stoppages.)

Rack the operating handle to the rear (or slide of an automatic pistol) and at the same time...

Roll the weapon so the ejection port is down. This lets stuff fall out of the receiver. Release the operating rod or slide and let it slam shut.

Much easier with a pistol, but why learn two techniques?

Thanks! That's very similar to what I learned in IDPA drills, but just didn't call it by the same name.

Tap, Rack & Roll is very descriptive.

If ya don't roll it you can leave a loose case or cartridge inside the slide. Pistol or rifle. Roll it aggressively to throw anything in there out of the receiver.

Update on my previous post. Sorry no pictures as requested. I've been on vacation and only have my iPhone. Today I went shooting with my brothers and father and tweaked the ejector so I could get the gun working enough to shoot it, figuring it would still jamn once in a while but not enough I couldn't shoot it. Wouldn't you know it, the tweak made the dang thing shoot perfectly! I was looking forward to the free mags but since it works flawlessly there is no need. Amazing how a little twist makes such an increddible difference.
