S&W's record on repairing old models sort of flounder's around depending on just how busy they are and who you talk to. Their "official" current policy is a NO - they won't repair antiquated models, however that being said, sometimes if you ask pretty please and they are not very busy, there might be an exception at the custom shop.
The reasoning behind this policy is three fold.......
#1) They do not have any back up parts for old models. If they loose, break, or have to replace a worn out part - they simply do not have it!
#2) They no longer have any old time GS's that truly know how to work on these older models.
#3) Why would a Company want to work on a 100 year old gun, have parts problems, liability issues, etc. when they can't even manage to manufacture, repair and deal with their current production models? They make way more selling new massed produced guns than on repairing old antiquated ones.
All in all, even though they were the Company that manufactured it, they are no longer the best qualified to work on that firearm. You are way better off either finding someone with passion, knowledge, parts and proper tools to properly repair or work on your gun OR simply learn to do it yourself.
BTW, this statement above applies to many items that have not been manufactured in many years! I have learned to repair, restore, make parts for MANY items that have not been made by the original manufacturer in a long time. Not only does the job get done correctly it gets done and I carry the knowledge I've learned forward for the future.
