Hey guys I headed out to my local gun shop to order a new S&W 629 Stainless 6.5" 44mag. My guy calls S&W and they are like... there are none and no estimated build date? He said they shut down most lines are just producing ARs! ***! Anybody else hearing this from Smith?

I doubt your dealer called S&W directly. Unless he carries a HUGE inventory of S&Ws - as in hundreds of guns - he buys them through a distributor and that's likely who he called.

But what you were told is probably true. According to a friend of mine who works for a distributor, Smith & Wesson is one of several firearms manufacturers who have advised them to place an order now for what they want for the third quarter of 2013 as their production for the next eight months is spoken for. And considering the current "black gun" craze, AR production could be a priority for all companies that make them.

Thanks! I usually go through my dealer. In fact he quoted me $925 + tax and backround to a tune of 1K! I think I need to start looking online!

Sly,

Buying online is a little bit more risky,, but I've bought from these guy's,, and all went good.

I try to purchase from known reputable dealers when I buy online,, ie CTD, Bud's, etc,, or other's that have Very Good Feedback,, with many transactions.

Best thing about Brick and Mortar,, is that you can inspect beforehand. However with a reputable online dealer,, you can also do that as well, at the FFL,, and can be sent back if visual inspection reveals defect or damage.

I don't know enough to advise anybody how to buy,, but I've bought several gun's online with no problems yet. However there is always that "1st" Time.... :)

Thanks Joe. My dealer is very reputable and been in business for many years. No problems. I am going to do a little more research before I purchase on-line. I can't believe how much the Smith 629s have gone up in value! None the less it's still a great investment.

I think it's always better to support your LGS if they can deliver at an acceptable (even if slightly higher) price - they need business to stay in business for you down the road. But if they can't deliver, I've had excellent online buying experiences with Bud's for new S&Ws (2) and with J&G Sales and Summit Gunbroker for used guns.

I don't worry much about buying on line if it's new. However, my "new" 617 came from bud's in about 95% condition. The muzzle was scratched up and it had a distinct turn line.

Like any other news, rumor, or observation in a gunstore, you have to consider that some of it is true, some exaggerated and some outright wrong. But you might consider info of some value about a condition, because the story got "legs."

When I went buy my 360PD, a salesman I used to work with when I first started sharpening told me that many of the J-frames he had in the showcase were the last he had. The new CCW provision had stripped him out of smaller firearms, but he had heard a shaggydog rumor.

At that time, he had heard that SW was weeks behind, and he had no solid date for replacement inventory.

Now, here's why you might consider the bedrock of that story. These stories both mention revolvers and a time lag in production.

Other than that, I don't but a lot of faith in what I hear in stores or read in gun and knife rags. It's a warning of a condition, or a consideration for buying when inventory and quality issues arise.

Hey, right before the old assault rifle 'ban' I heard a rumor that Colt had shut everything down and was just making receivers for ARs to date-stamp the production for storage.

Frankly, that made sense, but was it ever true, or just gunshop talk? Look at this info in the same light.

Well Ruger stopped taking new orders for a few months last spring to catch up on demand. I belive that was documented fact based on Ruger press releases. Same thing could happen to Smith.

Ya know... it's just nuts out there! I went out to AIM Surplus and Cheaper than Dirt to get some .45, .44 Ammo and they are out on most of the Ammo I typically buy! People are going nuts on Ammo and guns! My My Local guy said people are coming out the woodwork to buy guns and ammo! I checked other places here locally and no new 629s in 6.5"! Unreal. Kicking myself for selling my Ruger Super Redhawk 9.5". Very frustrating. I've never seen it like this. I could always get whatever gun locally with zero problems. :( I'm not sold on the Internet Gun buying thing yet.
