Not much to go on. Try to take some pics and post them. I don't remember off the top of my head which pattent dates were for which model, and I'm not at home with reference books. It's most likely a .45 Schofield or .44 American. (I think the .44 Russians had later pat. dates) Probably dates from around 1870 or so. A 4" factory barrel would have been rare, so it's probably been cut off. If it's rusty, you definitely want to put some quality oil on it so it doesn't get worse. Even in relic condition, these old Smiths will retain some value.

You apparently have a New Model No. 3, either a single or double action version, probably in caliber .44 S&W Russian. They do not have caliber makings on some models, however look on the side of the barrel to see if it says ".44 S&W cartridge" or similar.

double action 1 7/16 barrel i looked at the model 3 as suggested and it looks real close to the photo.

i will try photo bucket and post a photo. i can never get the size right for photo posting.

thanks for the help. i think i have a new model 3. im going to clean it and post a photo. next gun i got was just like the new model 3 but its has name that has been warn. it is chrome finish round butt and 45? cal. and 5 inch barrel. i also have a a garate anitua y cia. i read that s & w build these. where would i find more info on this. and it is a 357 standard swing out 6 hole 357. 5" barrel square butt chrome finish.and number 3325. i know this is a s& w site. but i hope someone can direct me to right place. thanks

"GARATE ANITUA Y CIA" means that it is a Spanish made copy of the S&W design, but NOT built by S&W. The "cia" means "company". I doubt that your revolver is chambered for the .357 Msgnum cartridge, even though it may chamber it. Many Spanish-made copies of the S&W were sold in the first half of the 20th century. Many are unreliable and unsafe with the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge. It might be a good idea to have a qualified gunsmith check it out for you before you fire it.

is this a new model 3? with cond. what is a value on this model.

Luckyblue, As I suggested, you have a S&W New Model 3 Double Action, sometimes called the New Model Navy, in caliber .44S&W Russian. It has a 4 in.barrel. From the photos, it appears to be missing most of it's original finish and shows considerable wear. Values vary according to location, however this example would be at the lower range of value, probably not over $500 US.

thanks for your help. just trying to sort thru this "box of old guns" my friend gave me.

does anyone reconize this fire arm it looks like a new model 3 but it a lot different? thank
it is a break over revolver. 1 3/8 cyl. 44 or 45 cal. five in barrel. double action. has laynard on rounded butt. can find no numbers only a few letters on the barrel.

That's a copy of a S&W New Model No. 3 Double Action. Probably made in Europe somewhere. Looks for Belgian or Spanish proof marks. Is there any stamping or markings on top of the barrel rib? Any serial numbers on the butt, cylinder or barrel latch? Ed.

do you think this would have orginally been chromed? i think that is why all the numbers are gone. i can see a few letters on the barrel. if bead blasting will remove the non-orginal chrome. i can try it.
