I bought a used rifle yesterday. It came with a S&W 3x9 scope. The scope has the S&W logo on the side and says Smith and Wesson inside a silver strip around the bell. The scope caps also have the S&W logo. I didn't know that S&W marketed rifle scopes. Does anyone know anything about these scopes, who made them their quality, etc? When were they marketed? This particular scope seems to be well made and has good optics.

This is off the top of my head, but I recall S&W 'scopes in the 80s and I think they may have been made by Redfield. Is the rifle you bought a S&W ? S&W rifle catalogs of the period may show these scopes. Ed.

No actually the rifle was the old model ruger 77. I would like to find a nice S&W bolt gun. I have heard they were made by Husquavarna and were top notch.

S&W sold a number of different models of BA rifles, early ones by Husqvarna and later by Howa, of Japan, and then by S&W. All excellent rifles. Watch Gunbroker, RIA, etc., and other auction sites, and ads in the GunDigest, etc They show up every now and then. Ed.

I just got a new in box S&W I Bolt for $299 on Gunbroker last week. I haven't received it yet, but I thought it was cheap.

I saw quite a few of these scopes in the late 1990's in my area. They were made in Japan, and reminded me in quality of the Bausch and Lomb( now Bushnell Elite) being produced in Japan at that time. I liked them.
