So I need some help from the experts here. Yesterday I ran across this Schofield at a local gun store. I handled it and it’s in great shape for its age. I passed on it yesterday but the more I think about the more I want it, even though it’s not cheap. I have found that HSM and Black Hills still make 45 S&W ammo, but I have heard that many of these were bored out to accept 45 LC as well. Not sure how to check for that though.

So what else should I check on this handgun?

Hi There,

There is something wrong here. Real Schofields ARE .45's. If
you are looking at some Italian copy, I cannot say about them.

From your picture, it looks like a S&W Schofield 2000. These
were made by S&W starting around 2000 for the cowboy action
shooting sport. They are already .45 (that is, .45 S&W and not
Colt). They cannot be "bored out" to accept .45 Colt (the cylin-
der is too short).

Cheers!

It does not appear to be an original Schofield

I have 3 original US Schofield's and they are all lettered. Before buying any of these expensive items I must, in person, go over them with a fine tooth comb and all my research papers, books, next to me, as well as tools to pull grips, etc. and magnifying glass and be prepared to make notes as well as pictures. There are too many fakes out there and SAA Colts are the worst,,remember Tommy Haas and his Mexican friend. I have seen his work in person, spectacular and very scary. Be very careful.
