LOL... Yeah, there's been a few threads pondering it.
Since SA did it (subcompact single-stack) with the XD-S, there's no reason why S&W couldn't do it with the Shield.
I believe it would be easier though, for SA to scale down the XD-S to accommodate a 9mm and .40 platform, than it would be for S&W to scale up the 9/40 to a .45. Some are speculating that this was why SA did the .45 caliber first, rather than the 9/40.
