a friend of mine has a s&w shotgun..but thing is i am a very short woman and i need a short gun to be effective as the mossberg security i have now is just too long in the reach! i have a cougar problem where i live and have so far been chased by a cougar and killed 2 with the security, but it is hard for me to use..and this little gun whips butt in the size dept for me.
BUT he got it from someone who got it from someone and hes scared it may be hot because it has a p on the barrel. anyone care to comment on this, i want to buy it but i dont want to get in trouble for having it. and i sure dont want to buy it then get it taken cause it is hot..lol
he said it could be a cop car gun???
i wish i had written down the modle number but i didnt. thanks for any help on this

If you are able to handle recoil, have a competent gunsmith fit the 12ga. to your frame. The 'smith can either cut down the standard stock or order one with a shorter "length of pull". Another good choice would be to get a youth model 20ga. as they usually have a length of pull shorter than a standard size stock. A correctly fitted shotgun with make it easier for you to handle the recoil and easier for you to be accurate with.

If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't right. Go with your gut on this one. Buy from a dealer or someone you trust and always trade IDs and receipts.

if your a women why is your name shotgun "eddy"? just curious. anyways what does the "p" have anything to do with anything? just get a folding/ adjustible stock for the mossberg, i have one and it makes it perfect for my wife, if she needs it. why did your friend buy it if he thinks its "hot" and possibly stolen from a cop car, not very wise in my opinion.

my son is a ma and my son in law is a snipe and my soon to be ex is gmcm(ret) and a cheater..who ran off with a woman half his age the day our house burned down..but i too still say GO NAVY also the person who has the gun is a ret chief, and didnt notice the p till he bought it and got it home and cleaned it. we were just wondering..and i dont have money to buy a new gun by the way. i was just woondering if anyone knew about that p.

Without a photo it is very hard to tell what the P may mean; however, I'm pretty sure it is a proof mark, not an indication that the weapon was a police issue gun. If a PD marks an issue gun, it usually has the initials of the department, such as SFPD, APD, etc. Most PDs do not mark their weapons. The only way to find out if it is stolen is to have your local law enforcement agency run the serial number through NCIC. BTW, you may want to get the stock modified on your Mossberg to better fit you. I'm guessing you are talking about a S&W Model 916 (a pump action shotgun), which hasn't been made for 20-30 years, and parts can be difficult to find for it. The Mossberg, on the other hand, is still in production, and parts are plentiful for it. Just food for thought.

As was said I suspect the P is just a proof mark and very few of us are the original owners of even half the firearms we have. If your worried have the serial number checked then you'll know. Assuming you Mossburg is a Model 500 the easiest way to shorten it up is order a Youth stock for it.

Please describe the cougar attacks and where you shot a cougar, and with what load. (Slug, buckshot, birdshot -what size- where the shot hit the cougar, reaction, etc.

Do you have any idea what caused the attacks? Were you being stalked, or did you surprise one in a barn, etc.

Cougar attacks are on the rise, with Vancouver Island probably having the most.

Do you have photos of the dead cougar?

Is it the early Eastfield pump or as said above the 916, or the later 3000 pump? or a semi auto 1000???
not many folks work on these anymore, nor are the parts readily available....I too would modify the Mossberg to "fit" YOU, quite easy to do................as for the "P", is it stamped ( a proof mark ) or 'etched' on like a property tag??? hard to say with out "seeing it"...........sorry you're not closer by here, you being Navy' family', we'd fix it to fit you for "free".....good luck

Eddy, When I was a captain, the 870 Rem. 12 ga was beating up on a female trooper assigned to my command. I fitted the stock to her with a Pachmayer tripple magnum recoil pad installed. She was then comfortable using the issue rifle slugs and buckshot. Skeet shot as training was a nothing. Best wishes, Jack
