When my grandfather pasted away about 25 years ago, I was left his S&W .38 , duty belt and cuffs. Was thinking of getting a letter for the gun and possibly displaying it with his picture. Not really looking for info, but just tossing the idea out there. I'm proud to own his old revolver...And to think they carried lead round nose as a duty round.

Sounds like a plan. Post what you get done.

great idea. i made a shadow box table for a deceased army veteran friend's widow a few years. might be way to go to display the duty gear, gun, photos and letter. let us know what you do. lee

I would definitely not have anything done to the revolver itself other than a good cleaning and perhaps a coat of Renaissance Wax on all exterior surfaces. I would also have a good leather treatment on all of the leather gear to preserve it. Then I would display the whole thing proudly but securely... it would be a tragedy to have that piece lost or stolen because it was too easily gotten to by the wrong person. Congratulations on having a wonderful piece of family history. Preserve it proudly and pass it on to a prepared next generation who will love it.

PS BTW, I definitely would take it out and shoot it on some special occasions (his birthday, anniversary of his passing, special holidays, etc.) and let that old workhorse enjoy being out again. I personally would feel honored to have that connection to my grandfather!

Great story, I enjoy the history behind the weapon. There are some guns out there just for shooting and some just to appreciate.

This one gets both. Appreciation AND range time.
