And pythons/boa constrictors.

LOL! Yes, we have lots of gators here in Florida and unfortunately we also have too many invasive boas & pythons that are devastating the Everglades. Unfortunately, shooting gators or boas is not allowed even when hunting or capturing them so most Florida gator hunters use bang sticks to dispatch hooked gators. I understand that in other states, .22 LR or .22 WMR is the standard gator killer.

The good thing is that gators, even the Godzilla sized gators, are generally shy and don't hang around people (unless the idiots are feeding them!). I have heard of a few folks that killed gators with handguns when they attacked their dogs, but I doubt that they were toting around a .500!

Back to my original question, thumb forward or over for best control and accuracy.

500 S&W

My 500 8&3/8" with an EOTECH does a great job on big Illinois Whitetail.Used to use Hornady 500 grain JSP until I found Underwood 700 grain all lead rounds.Energy, energy energy! I'm looking for clean one shot kills. These 700 grain rounds don't shoot very flat though! But I don't take shots over 50 yards anyway. As far as hand placement?Yes,thumb back and nothing near forcing cone.In a quick and hasty shot at a decent buck behind me in the treestand the blast from the forcing cone cut through 1"of mitten and cut my finger and put a 3" cut in the top of my backpack hanging in the tree.Lesson learned! That could have been a lost finger.Alot of respect now for staying away from barrel/cylinder gap blasts!

Agree...support hand thumb crossed over the back of the strong hand thumb. I don't own a .500, but this is my rule for any revolver. Just shoot one in the dark sometime and you'll see how far the blast travels out of the cylinder gap. I had my support thumb fried one time from a blast out of a vintage .32-20 revolver with some old ammunition.

I have an 8 3/8" I load 440 grain lead rounds in it. It knocks out the security cameras at the range with the first blast. Great trigger and really accurate.
