I'd go for a steel model like a 640/649/60. Unless you really want that light weight. But the steel models are more expensive. The 442/642 are about as cheap as it gets. Besides the polymer bodyguard.
Depends on the individual gun. I think I own and shoot enough J-frames to know. My original 637 is retired, having carried me through some very hinky places. I have 2 of the unlamented Wyatt 637 Deep Cover PC DAO models which have the finest DAs of any J-frame .38, IMO. I also have a 'standard' 637 PC with exposed hammer which feels no different in DA than my original 637. Other posters will report differently, and they are not wrong. As I said above, it comes down to the individual gun.
If you can get a Performance Center 637, go for it. I find myself buying PC models almost exclusively now and am pretty satisfied. Good luck and good shooting!

I have a S&W 637 and have Shot it only a few times.
It is wicked to Shoot, with my Mid Rang Reloaded
Double Ended Wad Cutters.
To me, that Revolver is just meant to Carry for Self
Defense and Shot once in awhile to Familiarize
yourself with it.
As far as the Finish I only Wipe it down with a few
Cotton Makeup Rounds and a Full Synthetic Motor Oil.
I don't recommend any Solvents, cause your just
wiping Black Residue off anyway.
The Frame is of course Aluminum with Finish Clear
Coated. Cylinder and Barrel Stainless Steel.
Mine has never been Holstered, it resides in my
Fly Fishing Jacket for Fishing Adventures and Closet
Hide Out.
The Best to you on your Decision and Endeavors.

My 637-2 has been my EDC for pushing 2 decades. Carries at 4 o'clock in a cheap Uncle Mikes. Regular ( at least 2X /month) practice. Since company regs don't allow firearms in Shop or office buildings, has to spend the day in center console of truck in all sorts of weather from blistering hot and humid, to ice and snow/condensation, etc.
Wipes clean, Altamont solid wood combats (sold with the gun new as an option) fit & feel great for my hands, carries with factory + P (whoever's cheapest when I need ammo). IL has never showed any issues. It is a 2002 gun.
The bottom line for me is that I don't really care about the 637 as much as I do ALL my other S & W's which are in the safe, well loved and cared for and shot as frequently as I can. For my EDC I needed something that I would not agonize over if stolen, dropped, scratched up, etc. and the 637 just fits the bill perfectly for me. However if you are carrying daily....you for sure want something reliable and this is a good one.

My LGS had one the last time I'm in and I'm debating on buying that one while my 442 is that mother ship. I like the idea of having a hammer. Mainly to put my thumb on it while holstering.
Again, it depends on the individual gun. A side-by-side in the LGS, if possible, will answer this ? for you. There's been much discussion about finish on these lightweights, mostly referring to the 642. Some guns show almost no wear, that wear limited to the edges that come into contact with a holster. The finish on other guns may peel almost immediately. "You pays your money and you takes your chances." Anybody know who said that?
Get the one you like and learn to shoot it and carry it with confidence. Don't regret spending the extra $ for the PC model if you prefer it. Good luck and good shooting!

I've got a 637 that pretty much lives in my truck. It serves there as well as an occasional bug and sometimes pocket carry piece. I bobbed the hammer spur for pocket carry.
A good friend of mine passed it on to me right before he went to the big shooting range in the sky. I highly recommend any of the 637 models. I suspect he put some lighter springs in it, as the trigger is awesome! I hope you get one and enjoy it!
