Sad Day

I have loaded a lot of handgun ammo with Alliant Powders. I started out, like a lot of us did, when it was Hercules. Powders such as Unique, Bullseye, Blue , Red ,Green Dot and 2400 populated my shelves. These powders, for me, were reliable, trustworthy, economical and perhaps most important were always available and affordable. I reveled in duplicating the old school loads by Skelton, Keith, Taffin, etc. I took much joy in pouring that 7.5 grs of Unique under those 240 gr Keith cast SWC. Yes I can find other powders to do the same job I suppose but it's just not the same. End of an era and yes it is kind of sad.

I agree! Bullseye, Red Dot, Unique, and 2400 are all oustanding powders.
Besides their obvious roles in classic revolver cartridges they are all exceptionally well suited to reduced cast bullet loads in all the classic bolt action and lever action cartridges.
They also behave predictably when working loads up (or down!) without erratic behavior or unpredictable pressure spikes.
In other words, they are ideal powders for reloaders who do their own homework and develop their own loads.

To the same list, I would add all the great DuPont powders in the IMR and SR series.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of folks that only begrudgingly reload, and even then, their primary objective seems to be duplicating factory ammo and minimizing time spent developing loads, working at their bench, or even cleaning their guns.
That’s fine, too! I get it. Some guys just want to shoot.
But, for those of us who actually enjoy reloading, those older powders work like a charm.

Having said that, Vihtavuori and Nobel make some nice powders, too.

PS: the good news is Alliant powder is now out of the grips of Vista Outdoor or Kinetic Group (?), so maybe brighter days are ahead!
If I have to spend $40-50 a pound for powder, then I want MY choice of powder!

Are they discontinued? I haven’t reloaded in 40 years and was thinking of starting up again, I can’t find wadcutters for sale commercially. Went looking for powdered and it’s non existent. Gone forever?

I have an 8# jug of 2400 that will probably be never opened,,
And, there is a 3/4# partial jug,, if I ever want to "load a few",,,

Maybe my grandson will toss it in a bon fire,, to celebrate my passing,,
(OR,, maybe he will take over shooting the 629?? )
