I've read with more than passing interest of the folks who have lost dogs. Yesterday was the my day to join that fellowship. Sadie, our Gordon Setter, would have been 13 next Monday. It was not to be. My wife and I 'rescued' her 9 years ago. Being a Gordon, she took no time in training us to her satisfaction.
Missed opportunities? I shoulda brought the camera taking her pheasent hunting. When I tell the story it is in the context of having a picture of her on point as the cover of Sports Afield or some such magazine.
We found out she had lung cancer several years ago. Luckily, living in Wisconsin, we had access to the UW vet clinic. She ended up losing her entire lung. And then chemo...
Trooper that she was, she shrugged it off-darn near back to normal! But, one year ago a follow up xray showed a tumor in her other lung. Even so, she was game to the core. Starting around Easter, though, she was slowing down, not eating with a decided limp. Long story short, the tumor had tripled in size with numberous nodules.
This is a bit long, but folks on this forum can relate to our missing our 'big black dog.'

I'm sad for your loss. What a great lady was Sadie. How fortunate she came into your lives.

Sorry for your loss Jim. I had my Doberman, Sadie of 14 yr put down several years ago. Still feel the pain, other dogs since then but nothing like my Sadie

Another guy who understands your pain.

Just remember after a period of time, there is another dog out there waiting to take care of you and your family.

You just need to find your new friend and get on with it.

Sadie would expect it of you.

With understanding, Jim . . .

Condolences Jim gota love them and their ability to get over things. Really special animals.

Sorry Jim. Thoughts are with you.
I lost Lexi Nov 08, and it still sucks. My daughter keeps hinting about what kind of dog might be nice to get next. They truly are members of the family, only they don't complain, nag, or anything other than give unconditional love.

Jim,

Sorry to hear of your loss.I will face that day soon enough myself with my older dogs.

Having lost Scout and Sedona both in 2009, I know just how you are feeling. We are lucky to have two more dogs and three cats to help fill the void.

I'm sorry for your loss. I always get teared up when I read a post regarding the loss of man's truly best friend. I'm in my office now with my 12 yr. old choc. lab sleeping on the floor next to my desk.

Beautiful lady, beautiful soul! Yes! I said soul! You were a lucky man to have the love of that lady. Now, God called her back. I can see her on point. God bless her!
