Hi: My daughter is considering buying a in the wall gun safe, searching on line we seem to be finding only Homak&Stack-on both of which seem to be a little flimsy (cheap). Are there any better in the wall safes? Maybe some owners of the above mentioned safes could give us their opinion, maybe they are better than they look! John

I dislike any type of wall safe because you can't get much in them. And they are not very secure. Most are not fire resistant.

Homak makes a good product depending on your needs. But there might be better options.

If she's looking for fire and burglary resistance then a good gun safe bolted down might make more sense.

If quick access is the priority then this might work better.

I just Googled "high security wall safes" and found several that that looked quite substantial at about $300.00.

But I agree with Kanewpadle that these safes tend to be too small.

A floor safe might be a better choice. Hidden under a scatter rug, it is completely concealed, and it can be quite deep. You will want to remain in the 14" width like the wall safe so that it fits between joists, but a 12" or 16" depth would store lots of stuff.

In my house (a ranch house) this is a simple thing as cutting the floor goes directly into the basement. I've been considering placing one in my closet.

If you can cut through the basement concrete you can set the floor safe in concrete and it will be super-secure. See: http://www.mercantila.com/p/cobalt-...com&utm_campaign=cobalt-fs-b4-floor-safe-safe

when we built our current home 20 years ago, we had an expensive in the wall safe installed. wife wanted it in the master closet for some of her jewelry.
it has been empty for the last 15 years as it just does not hold as much as she thought (not that she has that much anyway) and since it would only hold 4 hand guns i do not use it as well.
have an in floor model for her goodies now that works great.

Costco has a gun safe for about $300. It will fit inside a closet, can hold a great deal )including long guns, handguns, and valuables. If your daughter plans to move at any point you just unbolt it from the floor and take it with you. More utility than a wall safe, but without the construction headaches.

I can't find the exact one in their online store, but my local Costco had 8 of them on Wednesday. They look sort of like a cross between these two shown on their web site:

Costco - Sentry®Safe Safe

But have a digital lock and bolts that extend in to the frame of the safe like this one:

Costco - Sentry®Safe EM1055EP Executive Firearms Safe 4294965634&Mo=4&***=0&No=3&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC40487-Cat3373&topnav=

If she just has pearls and a handgun, a simple safe bolted to the floor in the closet is still a better alternative as in the one referenced above this post.

I have never seen the safe I see at the store on the web site. They sell hundreds of them here and are very popular where I live. As my wife is addicted to Costco we have been in everyone (or so it seems to me) from Burlington Vermont to Manasas Virginia. I have seen them in some but not all of these stores.

If I can get a product code for them from one of my cohorts I will pass it along. But it is the best deal going in my opinion.

Please, please, please stay far away from those safes. I've posted many times about problems with inexpensive safes made overseas. People pay us more than those safes are worth to get them open. And they are understandably not happy at all. They can't get to their firearms, extra checks, vehicle titles, passports, birth certificates, etc........

With safes you definately get what you pay for.

As far as floor safes, they're great but in most cases condensation will be a problem. You MUST use dessicant in floor safes.

To the OP, indentifying what the safe will be used for will help a great deal in determining the safe to buy. It's an investment.
