safety hammerless issue

Hi folks,

An issue I've run into on a project gun has brought me to the forum. I have a 4th model safety hammerless in .38 which (you guessed it) had a broken trigger return spring. I have installed a replacement spring, and although the trigger reset issue is fixed, I noticed the rear of the trigger guard sliding forward after a trigger pull. To confirm my suspicions I test fired the gun today, and the rear of the trigger guard popped out after the first shot. I am unsure exactly what the issue is, guessing maybe the spring is too long? The trigger guard does not seem to be the issue as the ledge which sits inside the frame is in tact. It is the trigger reset that is moving the guard. Wanted to see if anybody had some insight before I take any material off the spring.

Thank you

Hi There,

I don't understand how the trigger guard can move. It is
held in by its own spring tension (the trigger guard is a spring
in itself). Is the trigger guard loose in the frame? It shouldn't
be.

Cheers!

Hi Webb, i will attach some photos. The trigger guard is solid in the frame prior to the trigger pull. No movement and under strong tension. However when trigger is at the rear, you should be able to see a small gap between the rear of the trigger guard and frame. In this position, i am easily able to pull out the TG from the rear.

Hi There,

I'm still at a loss to know how the trigger spring can make the rear of
the trigger guard move forward. If the guard is tight in the frame, how
can it move?

Cheers!

I am at a loss myself. It is tight in the frame in the sense that there is no play in either direction. I can put forward tension on the rear of the trigger guard as if i were squeezing it out of place in order to remove it, which does move the rear of the guard forward, however that is somehow occurring without my doing once the trigger breaks.

I am messing around with it now and just noticed that the front of the trigger guard is also being pushed down by the spring once the trigger breaks. As i ride the trigger back to a full reset, the rear of the trigger guard slides back into place while the front lifts back up to sit flush in the frame

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the bow of the trigger guard has been pinched too much for removal and has not taken its original shape. I'd remove the guard and place it 'bow' side up on a board and smack it with a hammer. Trigger guards can be found online if it should need replacing.

That very well may be. I will give it a go and see if i have any luck
