I have another off-the-wall question. For me much of the pleasure of firearms is understanding the designs of each gun and its history. I like to look up the patents associated with each arm and see for myself what the designer had in mind when the patent was applied for. S&W patents are well known and pretty easy to come by. I have successfully located all the associated patents but one………….

Smith & Wesson New Departure Safety Hammerless 38 S&W, 4th Model (1898-1907). This revolver uses a very uniquely designed cylinder stop. See image below. I think it is very interesting in how the split spring attached to the cylinder stop and functions off the hammer.

Can someone tell me the patent number or date received for the patent covering this combination cylinder stop / split spring?

Thank you!

I'm not following; the split spring attaches to the cylinder stop but you are asking about the "hand". The hand revolves the cylinder and is not attached to the split spring. Either way, I can't help with your patent search.

mmaher94087 thanks for the catch! I was wondering why I have not had any responses all day. I assed up. Have been working on the hand for another revolver and my brain got switched. Sorry...............

Thank you. I thought I'd lost my mind. The last time I found it under a tab labeled Miscellaneous. I'm purely guessing that one might access the original patent for the Safety Hammerless / New Departure and maybe find the patent number?

Thanks, I have those other patents concerning the Safety Hammerless. None of them seem to describe the cylinder stop in question.........

That's why I was hoping that someone else had found this information.
