I did a search today to prove, or disprove the valuation of a Safety Hammerless revolver still being an under 1k revolver in original box, these being standard barrel length revolvers, and not bicycle revolvers, as those will bring more, and the data was inconclusive, largely because of an extreme outlier, but it seems the hammer price of $750 for good examples, with buyers premium, makes these a $900 revolver, mostly, with some variation in either direction, based on condition. Non standard barrel length or condition increases the value, as would be expected. Lots of nice examples in this auction, Dr Hudson’s collection.

Two went for under $900 (one at $660 ($550 plus 20 % buyer’s premium) and the other at $780) because they weren’t pristine, but condition wasn’t exactly lacking, and so affordable entry level examples with boxes:

Three examples at $900 each:

Excellent Smith & Wesson 38 Safety Hammerless Revolver

Excellent Smith & Wesson 32 Safety Hammerless Revolver

Smith & Wesson 32 Safety Hammerless Revolver

Two examples that aren’t much different than these first two that sold for $1140 and $1560, which proves that, while a Safety Hammerless revolver in box still can be found at under $1000, the $1000 ceiling can be cracked from time to time:

And now, the extreme outlier!!! $4500.

Any ideas why this revolver, standard in all respects, brought so much? My only guess is that two or more individuals recognize this revolver, by serial number, being significant with regards to individual or event???

And the remainder with boxes in this auction. Bicycle guns, $2040 (C & R) and $2400 (ANTIQUE):

And now the engraved one. First, a “New York” engraved example, $2520:

And two factory engraved examples, one at $2640 and the second at $3480. The second revolver is outstanding in that it’s in its original box, factory engraved, AND a bicycle gun! No, I didn’t win it, but it’s a lovely revolver and, in hindsight, I should have pursued it:

Edit: The engraved bicycle gun is NOT in its original box, as the label is for a 3 1/4” example. Thats why I hesitated a little on this one, but a factory engraved bicycle gun is certainly unusual, even if it lacks the original box.

I'm no expert in statistics or safety hammerless/new departure revolvers, but when analyzing stats we normally discarded outliers at work, unless it kept coming back in future populations. Then, it was worth investigating the cause.

IMHO, pocket top break revolvers were much more plentiful in nickel finish; so, I can see why one with a blue finish in mint ícondition in its original box would bring a premium price.

Thanks for the detailed write up from that auction. There were some beautiful guns in his collection.
I love the New Departure models, and wanted to bid on a few you showed above, but I hate dealing with auction houses. I still think that the Double Actions and New Departures are way under valued in the S&W collectors market. I know they made a lot of them and more survived in better shape than other models, but I still buy them when I see a good deal.

Edit* Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
