I like the thumb safety on my BG. As I am planning on carrying that, I owe it to myself, as well as the others with me, to ensure the safe operation of my firearm. Thats why I prefer them.

With the M&P a thumb safety is a moot point. The only time it adds any value at all is during reholstering.

I made it a habit or practicing withdrawing my M&P .380 while snapping off the safety with my thumb, it has become habit & second nature to me now. Even though it has a a nice long trigger pull accident's can & have happened, especially when we are out & about in our daily lives it's easy to forget it's in my pocket, it feels no different than my cell phone in my pocket. I'm walking out to the car after leaving the grocery store, while texting my wife, I reach in my pocket to get my keys.... No... I owe it to my self & to society to be 100% responsible at all times while carrying a firearm.......I use that safety.

Some people will say an external safety is a determinant if your carry gun has one. Just another step to remember to do in a panic situation. That it takes too long to turn it off., if you remember to do it.
For me, I prefer a carry gun with an external safety. I like thumb safeties. For my competition guns, it doesn't matter. I am currently shooting a Para Hi Cap 1911 with a thumb safety. I am used to thumb safeties. When I shoot my 5" Pro w/o a thumb safety, I am always trying to sweep it off. I laugh at myself and carry on.
When I put my 9c in my purse to use the restroom, I feel better with that extra layer of security. I have been complemented on my safe gun handling, so it is not like I am not safe when handling my gun. But in my book, being too safe is impossible.

There are times when the safety could be useful. Other times, just leave it off. Problem solved.

I grew up with the 1911, very comfortable carrying it in condition 1 (cocked and locked), had no problem carrying/using d/a revolvers and when stricker fired pistols came along I tried Glocks. Never liked them but I really like the M&P, my full size doesn't have the thumb safety and when I bought the Shield I waited until I could get one without. For me, no need for a thumb safety on this pistol.

In the abstract I prefer them , but not a dealbreaker by itself.
Started ( in bottomfeeders ) with 1911 and DA/SA before striker fireds. No confusion , becasue if it has a safety , it's used. ( My two current prefered carry semis are both decocker onlys because I otherwise favor them , but hey.)
But the reason I prefer on safe doesn't particularily have to do with concern with AD's .

I prefer a saftey, it does not have to be used. If I must leave a weapon in the locked car for any reason (enter a court house) remove magazine and set safety on.

my .22's have a safety but i dont use it (just for plinking at the range, etc) and my 9c does not. I didnt get this 9c based on it not having one, it was just the "right gun at the right time" for me not to pass it up. Though i have my permit i do not yet carry; and to be honest i'm not sure if i'd carry this firearm or get something with a safety. That decision would be part of any training i'd take, just not there yet.
But my gut says while i'd maybe like to have one it may not be a deal breaker for me down the road.

It depends on the pistol as only one of my Sig's a P220 SAO (single action only) has a safety and the rest have de-cockers and I'm happy with both situations.
I sold my Glock's because I didn't like the little safety bar in the trigger as it would be easy to see how and accident could happen when someone u-holsters the pistol in a hurry. I'm like Glock products but they just weren't for me.

I take 'em the way they're designed. 1911 style and non striker fired semi auto's need external manually operated safeties. DA/SA pistols with a decocking lever and striker fired pistols don't need external manually operated safeties, although if the decocking lever doubles as a safety, that's fine by me. Revolvers don't need safeties. Never met a modern long gun that didn't need an external manually operated safety.

My opinion and decision was based on need. Which will I need more often? The extra layer of safety, or the split second of having to flip a lever in my next gunfight. I do pocket carry a LCP sometimes, but when there's an option like on my shield, I get the thumb safety

I like my thumb safety but we don't carry in NJ so it's not an issue regarding on or off in a defense situation. With or without the safety I also like the long first pull of a 3rd gen DA/SA.
Extra added attraction, magazine safety so I can rest easy that some relative who might get their hands on it when I am no longer among the living won't shoot themselves after removing the magazine and thinking it's safe.

My CA Compliant Shield 9 I got on sale for $288 came with the Thumb Safety, Mag Safety, and @#%! Loaded Chamber Indicator. I have no problem at all with the gun having the T-Safety. I did remove the Mag Safety when I installed an Apex Sear and also removed the LCI, soaked in paint remover and scrubbed off the white lettering and the red paint on the sides before reinstalling it.
Grew up with a thumb safety and like a lot of you, always sweep for it, because everything I own has one. ('cept for my wheel guns) That's my answer, and I'm sticking to it.
