Sam Colt died of what?

was this something Brian Williams reported?

Nah. In 1862 he was under artillery fire with Hood's Brigade at Atietam Creek:-)

If he was showing dementia in his final days then collapsed suddenly, my money would be on a stroke, which goes with the whole gout/hypertension suite of conditions.

I'm somewhat fortunate in that i first experienced gout in my early 20s no doubt due to my Southern fried rearing, plus my Dr. said I'm a "under-secreter" of uric acid). I got on the health wagon and had my last severe attack at age 30. They say it takes about a decade for uric acid to build to the point of causing an attack, which makes sense cause it took me almost a decade to get past them.

Yes it is unbelievably painful. I had a couple of nights where I couldn't stand the weight of a sheet on my foot. Even then it throbs constantly.

Now, at 55, when I have joint problems or other pain, I make sure not to tell the doctor I have a history of gout, otherwise they'll just say "oh, its probably gout then"

Or I guess you could say Sam let his chambers get fouled to the point that the cylinder seized up.

I take Black cherry concentrate capsules or juice when my gout comes on. In a day or two the gout is gone. It neutralizes the acid that causes gout. I don't know why, but it has worked for me.

I had my first gout attack last spring - foot swelled up so that I could not get a shoe on - painful - lasted about 10 days. Doc put me on Allopurinol - after about 6 months discovered that I was allergic to it. I found that the cherry tablets seemed to work and I continue to take them - also added 1/4 tsp of baking soda in 8 oz of water before bed every night.

So far, so good - my dad had severe gout and from what I'ver read, heredity is about 80% of the cause with certain foods (high purine) adding to the triggering of it - I've never been able to make a connection with food and gout.

As soon as I feel a twinge in my big toe, I double up on the cherry extract and the ibuprofen tabs.

I looked it up and Gout itself won't kill l you but it apparently presents in conjunction with other diseases (Diabetes, High blood pressure, High cholesterol and morbid obesity) that will kill you

So - plus old age I'm over due

I had several attacks before I wised up and now it is under control.
Allopurinol makes the uric acid exit thru your kidneys.
Cholchicine is a rugged treatment for acute flare-ups.
There is a new, less horrible variant Cholcrys that doesn't tear you up like the other stuff.
You really don't want gout.
It is a gift from Satan, and is very bad.
The Supreme Being has allowed it as an educational tool.
It is intended to show us that we will not be burdened with more than we can bear.
But it will be close.

I have used / still use all of the above. These days I've added Uloric, at $250 a month, on the GP's suggestion. BIG hit on the ammo budget.

My biggest shooting problem these days is prostate cancer bone tumors that have combined with gout (in my hands, yes, unheard of, but biopsied and confirmed) to present big issues when handling double stack handguns and pistol grip shotguns. I've sold off some wonderful firearms at a nasty loss here lately because I can't hold them without pain. Much less fire a round.

What doesn't kill you won't make you stronger, it will come back and try again tomorrow.

Actually, that was Jeb Stuart that died from gonorrhea. It was much more common back in the days before safe sex.

I thought Stuart was killed in battle.

A lot of men, including a bunch from the Lewis & Clark Expedition, who slept with Indian women all along the way, contracted gonna rhea, but more likely died from the treatment before disease got them. The one Lewis administered was mercury.

In fact it was said they were able to track the expedition on it's Bicentennial by locating spits with high concentrations of mercury, indicating latrine sites.
