Sandy Lower?

Hello, I was cleaning my 15-22 after shooting about 400-500 rounds and noticed what appeared to be sand in the lower... Anyone ever notice anything like that before? Any ideas as to what its from(specifically)?

Were you shooting copper plated bullets? I have noticed a lot of, what I think are flecks of copper. Maybe that is what you are seeing.

Debris from the ammunition being fired. 22lr is not the cleanest ammunition in the world. It may not look pretty, but it shouldn't cause any problems, even over thousands of rounds. Clean down in there with q-tips now and then to prevent it from getting too bad.

Where were you shooting, outdoor or indoor? And if outdoor, what was the wind like. Sometimes, living in Florida, sand is just a fact of life. On a windy day fine grit sand can get in just about anything.

I shoot mostly Blazers and my lower gets that way too. I just blow it out with a can of air.

Yup, normal .22 LR debris. Blowing the lower out with a compressor works well too. As an aside, over lubrication makes the situation worse.

I think I know what happened, I was shooting over 800 rounds using federal loads about a year ago... I wanted to use up those for my replacement 22 of CCI Tactical loads.. Well cleaning out the lower receiver I noticed small sand like particals, I think maybe powder flakes maybe burn flakes not sure, but it looked and felt like coarse sand... I haven't had that with CCI Tactical and I've put over 1200 rounds of that thru my M&P.. Also add Winchester, I also did about 300 rounds of that load as well with the Federal..

the only reason i blow it out is because i figure it would give me a smoother trigger without all that "grit".
