SAPD Model 58

I've had a SAPD model 58 for a long time. I know where it came from so I never lettered it. I'm guessing it went to a distributor, then to SAPD. The "SAPD" stamps were obviously not done by S&W. They're not as neat as S&W would have done them. MY 58 isn't a safe queen as it's got some carry wear, obviously by a right handed officer as the right grip is more worn than the left, more often caused by getting in and out of a cruiser. I carried one for a couple of years back in the 70's and traded it for something else. Back then I was a broke cop and if I wanted something new I had to trade or sell something old. I found my SAPD 58 in Slidell,La. 20 years ago for $400.00. It has the original wood magnas and an aluminum Tyler T grip adapter. NFS. My son gets it when I take the dirt nap.

Mine letters to the city.

The stamps were applied at the SAPD armory (with loose individual hand stamps and not very even).

I did see a sequential pair that were sent to the city for evaluation. The S&W factory had stamped those (and they were perfect). The last time that I saw the pair was 20 years ago, for sale together only, and they wanted big $$$ back then.

Oh man SaFireman
I almost wish you hadn’t mentioned these. lol. I won’t be able to get em out of my head now.
How about this as a distraction:

Shipped 1964 to Ada OK police department, qty of 25. All nickel 58's

I put those Patrick Grashorn Elk Stags on it. It came with the correct diamond magna PC stocks that are numbered to the gun.

PS.....it shoots great too :)

Like fireman, a little off track. Many years ago I bought (really traded a Model 28) a former San Francisco PD model 58. In 1974 I took it with me to S&W for the Armorers School and had them Nickel plate it. So if any of you have a Nickel 58 marked SFPD that probably was my gun. I sold it after I retired in 1990 and regret it, along with several other S&Ws that I sold over the past many years.

The SFPD Model 58s were marked by machine engraving, not stamped or roll-marked, on the left side of the frame. At least mine was.

This gun has a storied history - San Francisco PD, CA DNR, DEA, Oakland PD.....maybe more?

I’m curious what loads PD’s were carrying when these were issued service pistols and how the .41 Mag was regarded ballistically.

My how times have changed…I’m toting around a 9mm plastic fantastic with a flashlight and optic attached these days.

Supposedly a Louisiana Department of Corrections gun……I wonder if I letter it would it show it went to one of the prisons. Would be interesting if it had Angola provenance.
