A friend of my wife's told her about a program at a nearby university where one of the clubs was raising money by having its members hire out for oddjobs this past weekend. The deal was $85/day, Sat or Sun or both.
This was my wife's way of telling me the yardwork was a bit behind.

I called up and arranged for a student to come over Sat and help with some chores. Polite young man showed up, we commenced to spread 1.5yds of mulch, we ran out of mulch just as it started to rain. We broke for lunch, the student noticed some targets hanging on the fridge door, he was interested in guns but had very little experience.

After lunch I had several heavy items that needed moving so we took care of those while waiting on the rain to let up. My mulch source is very close to the range I use so I suggested to the kid we go get another half yard of mulch and swing by the range then spread the mulch when we got home.

Well the mulch place was closed and here we are down the street from the range w/a 629 and 686 and a couple hundred rds of ammo. Gave the fellow a safety lecture, a few basic pointers and turned him loose under my watchful eye shooting targets at 50ft. He did very well, I was impressed and he seemed to be pleased.

Went home, he thanked me and headed back to school.

Now here's the funny part. My wife bumped into her buddy yesterday, subject of the student workers came up. The friend had a worker both Sat & Sun. On Sun her worker told her how lucky one of his classmates was. He'd worked Sat morning doing some yardwork for a guy and then they spent most of the afternoon target shooting.

The wife retold this story to me and asked if I knew anything about it (I hadn't mentioned to her about all the details of Sat's work). I explained to her about the rain, running out of mulch, mulch place being closed and being just down the road from the range with a couple of guns and lots of ammo. She was laughing hard at my logic as I went on to explain that given the circumstances I had no choice but to go shooting.

Take Care, Kevin

Kudos to you, sir! I love stories like this. We need LOADS of new shooters.

Did you start him with magnum rounds in those guns?

We shot soft .38spl and .44mag loads. I did bring a couple of factory .44mag rds and let him shoot them after he'd shot for a bit. I warned him the rds would be more powerful w/heavier recoil but based on what I'd seen he wouldn't have a problem. He did fine.

I personally don't think it's not cute to have someone, especially a beginner, shoot heavy loads without informing them and explaining what to expect. I'm out to promote safe shooting, not give people an unpleasant experience.

The student did ask my advice about buying a handgun, he'll be 21 this week. I advised him to think .22, right now the ammo is more in his budget. Doesn't make sense to get a gun that the owner can't afford to shoot.
