I have been looking for one of these for some time. They don't last long once they are put out on the rack and usually command a high price. I got this one a couple months ago, it had been out for a couple days and the lgs guys said that it had a lot of lookers but no buyers. They thought that because it was a gray gun and dirty, and had someones initials pantographed on the receiver, was probably the reason why. I looked it over, both bores were shiny, barrel selector was both tight and positive, no rust or pits anywhere. I took it home for $150 out the door. 22lr-410 and made in 1950.

I got to try it out a couple weeks later. The 22lr barrel was right on at about 20 yards but when I tried the 410 barrel there was no bang, tried a couple more shells with the same result. I got it home, stripped it down to just the receiver and boy was it dirty. I sprayed it heavily with some cleaner around the firing pins and hammer area and the next time I tried it out it fired.

My 1st gun...

My Dad bought me my 1st gun a brand new Savage Model 24 22LR over 410 in 1960...I have the hang tag and receipt...He paid $43 for it in 1960 which back then was a lot of money...Over the years I have harvested countless cottontail rabbits, squirrels, amd pheasants with this gun...In 1960 I was 12 years old...Later after high school I decided to attend Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy from which I graduated in 1972...My college roommate and I ate a lot of rabbits when I had time to hunt...I still have this Model 24 today...it is a prized possession of mine...My oldest daughter asked for mine someday and will be getting this someday as I want it kept in the Family...I might add that my Grandson admires it and would like one someday so I keep looking for one for him...Thanks for bringing back great memories of my Model 24...Roger

What you have there is the original model with selector on right and barrels brazed solid together. These are known to be very accurate, first being sold under STEVENS brand. Then they went to SAVAGE and selector moved to LEFT side but barrels still brazed solid. Also option for 22mg & 20g-3” besides 22 & 410 and several models. These two are the ones sought after to use for hunting in my neck of the woods. Then they started down hill the side select was replaces by a rocker type selector on hammer but still retained brazed solid barrels. Not as sought after but still known as an accurate combo. This is point the 24 series started down hill. The hammer selector models with barrels brazed at rear and banded at front. Not known for accuracy. By this I mean rifle barrel has practical accuracy but point of aim between rifle and shot barrel isn’t the same.
One in good shape out of first 3 described will bring $600 easy a mint gun can bring $1K. The open barrels don’t bring much more than $400

My older brother got one for Christmas 1964. And traded it off around 1970. It was a 22/410. I don't think he ever shot more than the box of 410's that he got with it! But the 22's, we killed a lot of ground hogs with it!

I'm down to 3. A 30-30/20, A 357msg/20, and a 22/20 Camper.

I made a carry case for the camper that holds two 100 round boxes of Mini-mags, two 20 round boxes of mixed shotgun shells, a scope , a cleaning kit and shoulder strap. These are my constant companions!

I bought my ex-wife a .22/20 gauge Camper. When she left, she took the Savage.

I sure miss that gun! :D

Had one just like the OPs...loaned it to a friend who's druggie nephew sole along with all my friends guns and was never recovered...

Have had a 24J-DL .22 Magnum/20 ga. for 20 years that will cloverleaf .22 Winchester 40 gr. HPs at 50 yards...switch to any of the newer 30-35 grain HPs and it won't do any better than 2"... Patterns shot and buckshot great but also "patterns" every brand of 20 ga. slug made no where near the POA for the .22 Magnum barrel...

Great find at a great price...Bob

This is my story except I am 8 years younger, mine was used, and I went to a different school.
That thing fed me through college back when you could drive up, knock on a door, and get permission to hunt in Illinois.

We kept a 24S-A (.22 mag/20ga) in the farm pickup window rack back in the 70's. Handy for the badgers, skunks, and other vermin encountered.

I'm slowly going through my dad's guns, brought it back last trip out west. Need to give it a good cleaning.

Barrel selector is on the hammer.
