Hi all, I've always liked the 99 savage and after tradeing off a 99 in .308 a long time ago I have been sorta looking for an older shooter grade for awile now. Picked up this one Saturday and not being an expert on them would like some info on it. Serial number I did manage to look up and its number of 517729 puts it as a 1949 manufacture. Other than Savage model 99 on the top reciever ring there is no model mark. The caliber is .300 Savage, has a 24 inch barrel, front sight is a brass long bead sight dovetailed into a raised ramp, rear sight is missing and was drilled and tapped for a scope mount. A steel shotgun buttplate and a round counter window on the left lower reciever. The stock, front and rear is number stamped matching the serial number. Has a nice bright bore and the stock is in remarkably good shape for its age, and apparent use, and has had sling swivels added front and rear. Blueing on the barrel is fairly good and is rather worn off on the reciever from being carried a lot. No rust or pits. I put a Marlin rear sight onto it for the time being and if it shoots well I will find an more appropriate rear sight for it. I know that its being drilled and tapped, the sling swivels being added and lack of original rear sight negates it as being a collector gun, but just wanted a shooter.
Now after all this, is this a model EG and with a purchase price of $325.00 did I do ok? (too late now!) Thank's for looking!

Savage 99

Vulcan Bob,
Yes, you did well. Look for one of the older Lyman tang sights, they work really well. Is it a 300 Sav.? They are a superb cal. I have a 1949 model EG, with a G&H side mount, and a Lyman 4X scope. Makes for a good all around hunting rifle. Just finding a good hunting grade 99 is getting harder to do. Lots of luck with the new rifle...... Dave

You got it at about 1/2 price from what I've seen, and 300 Savage is a great ctg.

Even D&T'd, I'd have taken that home with me for that price.
It's been a while since a decent Savage 99' was priced like that around here. Usually $500 and up.
As long as it's Drilled,,I'd be tempted to put an older Weaver or Lyman on it. M99's look good with a scope IMHO and I usually don't go for 'scopes much.

Does that deal keep you awake at night?! :p

If it does, I'll give you your money back right now so you can sleep soundly. ;)

I think you came out smelling like a rose, and that's a great catch! I agree with the Lyman peep sight or a correct vintage scope and mounts on it.

Bob, were you asking if it's an EG? It is and those letters are visable when you take the forend off. Or they should be. These are maybe the most common model. I have two of them. I think they're so common because they are so great and point perfectly for almost everyone. They are the model 10 S&W of rifles in that respect. I'm a big fan of these. You got a good one. And thank god there's no recoil pad!

You stole it! I have a similar one with a period Bauch and Lomb Balvar scope in it. You can find these on Ebay at very inexpensive prices. They are fine rifles. Hope you enjoy it.

Check out savage99.com

The stith mounts were really neat, fit into the sight dovetail. Although if your already drilled and tapped you could go with a mount.

A rear Peep sight is neat also.

You did well.

Thanks for the info and kind word's folks, Im sorta out of my element buying sporting rifles! Matt, thanks for the model number, sorta thought it was an EG model but wasent sure. It seems to be in working order and Im going to see if I can whomp up a go-no gauge for it and then see if it works and shoots well. If it works out, maybe a Marble peep sight is in order. Or since it did come with Weaver style mounts attached, an old period scope might be in order. Again, thanks all!

A Stith mount is ideal for a 99, as it does not require drilling and tapping, but it would be a waste on a rifle that was already D&T. Also, the mount might very well cost more than you paid for the rifle.

You did well; good price, and you can use it without worrying about a little more wear.

I like this old time scope mount setup because, as Bigolddave said, it doesn't involve drilling. It is classic Savage and pretty witty how they came up with this. That's an old Lyman Alaskan scope. Note just below the front mount there's sixteen notches in the wood for the deer the previous owner shot with this gun without the scope. I put that on later. Is this a "Stith" mount? I never looked.

Yes indeed that is a Stith mount, they are highly sought after these days and make an excellent way to scope a 99 that has not been D&T'd. A Lyman Alaskan is an excellent scope with a post & crosshair reticle. I had a 99RS in .250-3000, it had the heavier stock & forearm designed by Townsend Whelen and a Lyman windage adjustable tang sight.

I think this is an old Lyman peep on this '55 Featherweight .243. I bought it for $20 off a rifle in the pawnshop about ten years ago. If I get another oldie it'll go on it.
