Target of opportunity or grail gun? w/o photos hard to say. Rubber grips drop value along w/ there's probably some rust/corrosion under them. WAG.....$500-1200

Definitely sounds like a shooter grade Model 27 and one with finish issues. The lack of original stocks detracts from its value. I'd say it is definitely not a $1000 revolver. Depending upon how bad the finish really is and if it is mechanically sound, I'd WAG it as worth $500-$800.

I got hold of a blued N frame a while back that had minor finish issues. Even though it had an old factory re-blue, it had the beginings of micro blue specs here and there. Cleaned up nicely. It required a Powers oversize hand to be fit for it to run right. If you are looking for a good shooter/carry gun, a 5" 27 just feels right.

Looks like a lengthy soak in Kroil for the cylinder is in order. Afterwards, take a fired brass cartridge case and gently scrape at the rust with the case mouth. Is the photographed ugly spot the only one on the cylinder?

yes....that spot is the worst of it....maybe a freckle there and there..
lock work is stiff....probably just need cleaning...

Definitely "finish challenged". Penetrating oil soak and rub with a copper penny (real copper, pre-1982 penny), bronze wool, or genuine Chore Boy pure copper pot scrubber will remove the crusty stuff without further damage, but I am pretty sure I see some pitting on the cylinder. I'd class this as a project revolver.

That spot looks pretty bad - a professional refinisher might be able to fix it but it will cost $$$.

I have guns I like for their looks and I have guns I like for their usefullness - and actually have a Dan Wesson .357 that looked worse than that - I just removed the rust and cold blued it - a deer doesn't know the difference between it and a "prettier" gun ;)

Here are a couple of my "27s" (one is a pre-27 made in 1950) I actually paid $350 for each of them but that was perhaps 15 and 20 years ago - the market has changed a lot!

S&W Pre-27 1950 - SD Myers holster - compressed.webp

S&W 5in 27 165 GT at 25 yds.webp

FWIW I'd rather have a marred Pre27 to 27-3 than I would any modern S&W made after 1990 (just a general date nothing specific).

thanks for the help....I see it as a way to pickup a 5in 27-2...for not huge $...,i think it will clean up....not to be a pure collector piece....but rather a decent shape piece to go with my others

It would still bring $800 in Montana or N. Dakota...
For a 5" $800 is still good, even as your shooter...around here

The best part of buying a cosmetically challenged gun is you'll shoot it! At the right price of course.

Thanks for all the help....
went by the shop and all 42 guns went to an auction....per the lawyer who is handling the estate
