I looked at a nice S&W 651 with adjustable sights and a 2" bbl.it was in pretty good condition the asking price was just under $450.00. In .22 mag that thing must bark like heck. Is that a good price???

Its a good price yes. Also its not easily found in 2". I used to have one in 4", but I got rid of it. Very dirty, lots of burning powder or unburnt powder being spit with each shot. I think while good in concept, the ammo makers put a curse on this. As with all rimfire ammo its a 1 size fits all with them, with no distinction between rifle and handgun ammo marketed for this caliber. There ought to be 22 magnum ammo on the market with fast burning handgun powder in the cases, but there is not.
I think especially with a 2" barrel, the performance increase you'll get over 22LR ammo is not that great, because the barrel is too short to build much additonal velocity. Some guys love the 22 Magnum handgun, but I think plenty of us out here who have owned them found them to be kind of lame and not anywhere near the gun we expected them to be. Buy it, try it, but don't be too disappointed if you find its not what you hoped it would be. You won't lose money on it and could easily move a 651 in the classifieds here.

I'm with Geoff on this one I passed on it.I'd rather use my 3" model 36 or my 4" 617.

Tell ya what, I'd jump on it If nothing else as an investment, 4" models go for $650 + you could probably make $300-$400 profit on that famous auction site. I own one in 2" and love shooting it, it does have quite a bark and a 3' muzzle flash, but at 25 yds I can keep it in the black on most days with CCI maxi mags.......
BTW a 3" M650 (fixed site .22mag)just sold for $750 on GB and there's another one with a bid of $950 with a day to go......

That was my thinking...651's with the 2" barrel are not particularly common.
