OK guys, need some opinions and I know I'm in the right place!

Walking this afternoon and found this scat. The area is full of hardwoods and few white pine, rural mountain area of SW Virginia. Lots of woods and pasture. Yes, the scat had a
purple color to it along with lots of seeds. Leaves and pine needles so no footprints So what do you think? (about dog size maybe a little bigger)

there's no evidence of quilted Northern, nor leaves so it keeps most humans out of the running... too small for bear... prolly a big old boar coon is my guess too. They eat everything...

On one of the sick nature shows I saw a gun who proclaimed to be an expert. I never trusted them before, but this idiot just picked one of them up and sort of crushed it between his thumb and forefinger. Then the fool smelled his fingers to somehow confirm his findings. It was when I turned off the TV.

You're not a hunter, I presume?

OP - My vote goes for raccoon.

No wild hogs in our area. I didn't think coon poop was that big. Initially thought it might be bobcat but guess they don't eat berries or seeds when things are lean.

I'd normally go with raccoon, except for the abundance of seeds lurking in the stuff. While raccoons will eat seeds, it tips the scales a little more towards fox. Both will eat fruit, thus the color. Both usually have the same size scat. You usually see a lot of seeds in fox scat, whereas with raccoon, not so much.

Couldn't tell by the picture, but here's the thing that will help you tell the difference between the two....raccoon scat is blunt on the ends, fox scat is pointed.

(Yep...have had a little experience in scatology. Not something a guy would normally want to brag about.):p

You just have to love this forum, only place I know where you can learn about guns, cars, booze, cigars and unknown poop!
Actually the wealth of knowledge is pretty vast here. As far as what the poop is, it ain't mine so I'm passing on pointing a finger at it's previous owner.

How true! Great info guys... so probably coon or fox. Neighbor across the road was loosing his chickens to a good size red fox so maybe he is still hanging around.

Will keep you guys posted with new info, Thanks
