I have a S&W 669 that was given to my wife by her late dad long ago. It was used when he purchased it. It will not print any groups at 10 yards. Shoots like a scatter gun. I am an experienced shooter. Can I send this to S&W and have it rebuilt, repaired? Thanks....

So in the letter you enclose with the gun what would you ask them to fix?

Perhaps a new recoil spring is in order - it can make a difference in accuracy.

There are multiple things that can cause a revolver to not be accurate. Most often cause is the ammo being used. Next check the muzzle for wear, damage, unevenness. Check the cylinder for excessive play forward and backward as well as side to side. Is the lock up tight? With the gun empty, pull the trigger and hold it back. How much play, if any, is there in any direction? Does the trigger pull extremely hard/rough? Are the cylinder throats excessively large? Is the timing correct and cylinder alignment correct?

As you can see, there can be many causes, and it needs to be diagnosed. I would have a friend, with known ability shoot it over a sandbag rest, and keep the targets of also scattered. A 25 yard group from your type gun should be in the 3" range +/-. Once diagnosed I'm sure S&W can repair it.

Thanks for the feedback. One problem is my wife's Dad has passed away and my bride won't sell the gun, I can understand. We will try the ideas that you have suggested...Thanks, Spad

I had a 469 that shot like that when they first came out. Fit my hand almost as well as a Glock or a 2X4. Sold it and went back to a 39.

Try all of what others have recommended; different ammo, a good cleaning, a new recoil spring from Numrich, shooting it bench-rested, check for wiggle on the frame from excessive wear, check the bore for excessive wear. If all else fails, check with S&W if they'll service it. But one more thing to check is to go to the range and let someone you know is a decent shot give it a try. Sometimes poor trigger control and anticipatory flinch will throw your shots.
