I retired from the sheriff dept last June.Haven’t been doing much but going to doctors appointments. Then we had the Covenant school shooting. It happened less than 50 miles from here.A few days later a local security company called me and asked if I was interested in doing security for private Christian school near me.I thought about it and said yes.I had never wanted to be a Sro when I was working. But this turned into a wonderful experience. My campus is preschool thru 8th grade.I have never heard thank you for being here so many times. The children and the parents have been wonderful.Several of the children have given me small Thank you gifts that means a lot.Now schools out and I am having surgery Monday. If I get some medical issues fixed this summer maybe they will want me back in fall.

Are you plain clothes? Concealed carry? Get an office and a safe and keep an AR in it. Good on ya!!!

Good luck to you. I’m retired from Pittsburgh Public Schools after 17 years (My last gig in the Steamfitters). Their security was useless if in an active shooter situation, and even the School Police had nothing to fight a shooter with. School shooters were not a “thing” three years ago, but I believe they are still unarmed, the security. All the classroom doors were changed and locked at all times in all of our buildings and the outside doors were alarmed and locked at all times, except when the teachers went out to burn one, but it was better than nothing. I think any ne’er do wells are afraid of the students. But good luck to you and protect our future tax payers. Oh, and what Rudi said!

I might consider a security gig for the right money. As long as all I was there for was to shoot bad guys. No dealing with student discipline problems or such.

Based on the shooting statistics a large percentage of the bad guys are students with discipline problems. So there's that to consider.

You're in greater danger from the students and parents than any outside random actor at the schools here.

Why not carry the AR using a sling?

Serious. At first it WILL upset the ninnys, but it would show that THIS school isn’t joking around.

i.e. Lightweight AR, 16 inch or shorter, collapsible stock, without mall ninja accessories.

In uniform, armed, at entrance door/parent drop off the first (and every) morning for meet-and-greet.

On the day prior, school should push out information/bio on new employee to parents.

But sadly, administration won’t have the balls to allow SRO to carry the proper tools.

I’d insist on slinging an AR. If you want me to guard against nut jobs with long guns I’ll be having a long gun.

I find it ridiculous that with all the lessons we should have learned from past incidents of school violence/shootings Mayor Adams of NYC wants to house illegal immigrants in school gymnasiums. Nameless, unvetted illegals intentionally invited into schools. This is a guy who’s previous career was in law enforcement. He’s made some pretty stupid comments like “ if you think this is a bad idea, then you tell me where to put them”. Maybe he should have thought of this when jumping on the NYC is a sanctuary city bandwagon. School security is simple. Armed police and locked down.. And I mean POLICE. Not a minimum wage security guard. If you do the math having a LEO at every school would not add much to homeowners tax bill. It’s money well spent.

Not necessarily true. Remember The Coward of Broward (who still insists he did nothing wrong). If anything SRO’s should be better trained than beat Officers. SRO’s should be carefully screened so that Officers that are getting close to retirement and just looking for a easy, lazy job are not chosen.

You could take a lesson from Europe and sling a 9mm carbine like the H&K MP5 9mm. Get a Tax Stamp and SBR it.

Remember it is not that the odds of a attack are so low. It is that the consequences of failure are so high.

It's all about the money, whether well spent or not. Every penny used to pay for additional security does indeed come from somewhere. Short of a tax increase it will come from school programs or teacher salaries. Salaries are already the biggest cost for school districts, so wait for the howling of the "underpaid" teachers when they don't get a raise or, heaven forbid, a cut in pay to fund LEO's in every school.

As a private schooler, I would fight tooth and nail not to have my homeowners tax bill raised to pay for anything to do with public schools that I don't use. If public school parents want to pay a "security fee" to fund LEO's in every school, have at it.

Cuddos to the OP for stepping up.

I had that in mind while typing. That’s why I emphasized LEO. I think they’d be less likely to panic or run away. Or at least I hope so.

I can’t speak to every school district but in ours it would cost a max of a couple hundred a yr per household. Call it $20 a month. As for teacher which are already well paid in my district. They’d have to accept the fact that they SRO is there for their protection as well.

It is kind of upsetting to have one of your grandkids tell you they are concerned about being shot at school. We, as a society, have allowed the school shootings to go on since Columbine as we argue over how to fix it. Most of us here know what needs to be done. Most schools have Principals, Assistant Principals, and support staff. Surely they can find the money to add an armed LEO at the very least.

Re: School security. RO is a good idea. Better is to begin with the basics ... limited entry points w/ no big glass doors, etc. Eliminate most of the extraneous glass throughout the building, etc. Very much do not agree with the idea that squads of RO's are needed, much less arming officers with carbines, etc. Teachers should be authorized to cc standard pistols. Doors to rooms should of course be resistant to entry. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

Unfortunately, in our times schools need LEO protection. I remember when we brought our 22s to school and kept them in the coat closet to go shoot rats at the dump after school. NO ONE considered shooting another person.

You say that as though $20 more a month per household is acceptable.
