scope mounting

Did you mean 686-1, cause I don’t know a 685…?

If you did mean 686-1, there are NO scope mounting screws under that rear sight. That didn’t start until 686-4 or possibly 686-5.

Well i did mean a 686 -1 with a 8-3/8 barrel that is drilled & tapped under the rear sight

686-1 wasn't factory drilled and tapped so it's impossible to know the thread and pitch without trying it.

Unless maybe the long tube versions were D&T ... ? But I've never read that to be the case.

I removed the sight on my 686-6 and the tapped the same size as the 686-1 .What are the tapped size holes in the 686-6? the threads in the -1 have lock tite in them and need to be cleaned out to fit the screws.
I do not want to force anything and bugger the threads in the guns

On the S&W revolvers that are factory D&T on the top strap the thread size is 6x48. There should be no problem putting screws into those holes that already have had a screw in them. You have a far better chance of damaging the screw holes by using a tap to clean the loc-tite out than by just putting the new screws into the holes as-is!!!
