Scope mounts

I have a 29 - 3 with 8 3'8 " barrel manufactured in 1987 I believe, or at least that was the ship date. Looking to put scope on it. I get confused though cause some say they fit with the back sight removed and those screws used. But some say the older revolvers have a screw that is to small? How do u know what years affect this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help in advance.

The 29-3 is not pre-drilled for a scope mount, which is 3 separate holes from the mount screw hole that holds the adjustable iron sight on, (which is too small to hold the recoil of a 44 Mag). To properly mount a scope on a 44 Mag you will need to have it drilled and tapped to mate with a scope mount of your choice. There are "No-Drill" mounts available, but I have yet to see one that will stand up to consistent recoil of a 44 mag, and it the mount does use the small screw hole from the iron sight mount, be prepared to have it drilled out and re-tapped when you shear it off.

cleavland48: I have used on my S&W 629-5 for several years without any problems, A WEIGAND NO DRILL SCOPE MOUNT. MODEL #SSWHPMNTS + I looked for the invoice with no luck. You can look them up and give them a call. I had to remove the rear sight and used the hardenscrews that came with the mount. I use some Heavy hand loads for hunting.

Well that stinks I have no intentions of having it drilled either. Gun looks brand new still, and I shoot it fine with iron sights out to 75 yards. Was just looking to play around change some stuff up, but no way I'm drilling holes in my baby lol. I believe I'll stick to the irons deer hunting. Thanks guys for all your help! I appreciate it.

Mine has been on for over 25 years with no problems. B Square. Lock with red sealer & let it set over night. Same scope also. Put it on and don't worry. Its a bolt on.

Factory holes & comes with everything. I shot 19 grains of 2400 with a 265 jsp this past weekend. The scope takes away about 20% of the recoil. I shot a Freedom Arms 44 that weighs a little more at the same time & we agreed my 29 had a lot less recoil with the same mag load. Get a good intermediate scope that you can shoot standing with 2 hands.
