Anyone running a scope on top with a Reflex Dot on a 45 degree offset?

What are you using ?
Pros and cons of doing this.

We have some .22 and pistol cartridge tactical matches in our area. I'm considering running this set up. Close stuff taken with the dot, long range with the scope.

Evening Charlie

I am running a scope with 45°offset red dot (reflex) on almost all my AR/M-4's including my 15-22 & CMMG dedicated .22.

Not all shooters like that set up but for me it is the best thing since sliced bread. VERY fast at transitioning from long scope shots to 25 meter or under quick shots. No cons that bother me other than you have to be a bit careful of the red dot hanging off the side of the gun when shooting off of door ways or wall edges. Also off side is about impossible to sight the red dot so keep that in mind if you shoot off-side a lot. ( I use the scope off-side best I can but if I were serious I would mount a 2nd red on the off-side).

I have Doctor red dots on my real AR's/M-4s with a Burris red dot on my CMMG & 15-22.

If you go that route buy a few different 45° mounts as they are not all the same as far as scope position hang off or position to the rail. You need the dot to NATURALLY fall directly into your sight path as you twist the gun (no hunting for the dot)

On my 5.56 no issues at all but on the 22 try not to mount the red dot too close to the ejection port as the .22 is dirty & will cover the lens with soot after a lot of rounds.

I think you will like with the correct 30° or 45° mount (try different ones), as it is just a little natural twist of the gun & the dot just pops into your sight plane. Truthfully, I seem to shoot better with the dot off-set at 45° than with it straight up. The AR platform just seems to naturally fit me at that twisted angle.

To me much better than mounting the red dot on top of the scope as with the 45° you don't have to lift your head off the cheek weld to use the red dot.

Hey Wolverine, thanks for this info. That is awesome. Love this forum, pretty well find out anything you need to know from someone that "has been there and done that".

I believe just handling my AR's it would be an easy acquisition, like you stated. I have a DPMS with just a dot on top, if it works for the 15-22, I will do something similar for it.

Thanks my friend and God Bless.

Good shooting to u!

I'm running a 3x9 scope on a riser with Leupold see thru rings so I can use the "iron" sights. I also have a TRS-25 red dot on a Blackhawk offset mount.

The pictures show the red dot on the left side, it has since been moved to the right side. I adjusted the scope rings to move the main riser back and then moved the red dot to the front right, ahead of the ejecting cases.

It works way better on the right side. I simply rotate teh firearm CCW just a bit.

The scope and the "iron" sights are set for longer distances, while the red dot is adjusted for shorter ranges.

That's pretty cool. Thought of doing something similar like that. I want to have a dedicated composition/plinking upper and a scoped upper for when I get the chance to go squirrel hunting. Can I purchase a second upper and barrel assembly from s&w and just use the same bolt?

Pretty cool

How does the eye relief work on the scope, is that a pain?

I'm thinking of something like that but thinking about the set up a lot before I commit. I'm left handed, left dominant eye, so I should be able to do it. You mentioned ejecting brass, I gotta figure that in too.

Hmmmmm.....

Great photos, Doggie. Nice setup. Thanks for info.

Wolverine, I looked at one of the Burris Dots today, man it's small. Perfect for that 45 deg. Mount. Couldn't pull the trigger on the $250 price tag, though. :-)

It's the standard 3" or so of eye relief.

I got the 15-22 out today. It is on a .83" UTG riser. The scope riser is a 1".

I'll be I've had about 20 different sight/optics setups on the 15-22. I'm pretty comfortable with this latest setup, although I just got a good condition used Aimpoint CompM2...

Morning Rob

If you are looking to practice & see how the 45° reflex will work out you can find an "NC Star Green Mini Dot Reflex Sight" for under $75.00 if you look around & watch the sales or E-Bay. It has a green dot instead of a red dot & isn't water proof but I have a couple on some pistols & they do work good once sighted in. (just remove the cover to turn it on). Like the Burris the NC Star Green Mini Dot Reflex Sight automatically adjusts the dot intensity to the ambient lighting around it.

The smaller or micro "NC Star Green Mini Dot Reflex Sight" is about the same size as the Burris only it doesn't have quite the quality lens & isn't water proof & has no on/off switch like the Burris does.

Personally I have no (functional) problems with the NC Star Green Mini Dot Reflex Sights but they are a bit of a pain to sight in as they don't key into the base as good as the Burris so when a new battery is installed they need to be re-sighted in.

Truthfully I like the green dot itself better than the red dot but all my performance guns have red dots so I like to practice with red dots as that is what I shoot for competition.

If you aren't in a hurry then watch the ads for places like Cabela's or E-Bay running sales on the Burris. Given enough time you should be able to find one for under $150.00. Just be sure it is the Fast Fire-II as the -II is waterproof.

If you find a decent priced "NC Star Green Mini Dot Reflex Sight" even if you don't keep it on the gun permanently those little devils are handy to have around as a trial reflex sight to use on a new gun until you decide on a permanent sighting device.

Awesome info, Wolverine ! I really appreciate that. I will get one of the NC Stars for a trial. Hey I can always use it on something else, if I don't like it or decide to upgrade. Again, thanks my friend !

Blessings !
