I want to add a scope or reflex/optical sight to my 15-22...I have an Amazon gift card worth $100 burning a hole in my wallet:D
What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? I'm new to all this tactical gear.

Suggestions?

Really depends on what your shooting needs are. 25yds or less I would go with a tube style red dot. Any more than that I would go with a magnification scope. As for red dots, I would stay away from hallographic sights. I've had bad luck with them in day light, you can't see them. I picked up a great scope on amazon for $104. It's a utg/leepers 3x12 x44 compact swat scope with mil dot cross hairs and 36 different colors. If you search for utg compact swat scope on amazon you'll find it. Good luck.

Depends on the ranges you will shoot most of the time. Be sure to read up on which optics your considering, quite of bit junk out there. Good luck in your search.

I was just looking at the scope you mentioned...I also was looking at this one
Amazon.com: UTG 3-9x32 Compact CQB Bug Buster AO RGB Scope with Med. Picatinny Rings, 2" Sunshade: Sports & Outdoors

I'd go with a plain jane (no batteries),name brand variable 3-9,12 x 40/44 for your 15-22. Keep it simple. You'll enjoy it more. You can always "upgrade" later on.

I have RedDots and HG style and no problems with light (they all adjust brightness and are switchable from red to green) for different light conditions. Do your home work first.

I have that UTG Bug Buster scope on my 15/22. It's been really reliable, and holds adjustment just as you would except. The red/green dot sight adjustment is also nice. The green laser will eat into your battery more, but it stands out more than the red. I would recommend it. The easy on/off attachment arms are also very nice!

plus 1, found this scope and have been to range several times now, enjoy using it and even though it does have red/green (or other colors) i have been using it with just the black reticle so, it does still work without batteries;)

Generally speaking, the advantages of a magnified optic with crosshairs is more precise aiming. The downside is limited field of view and eye relief (slower target acquisition). The advantages of a 1x red dot are unlimited eye relief and field of view (faster target acquisition), small size and weight. The downside is less precise aiming than a magnified optic.

For example- If you shoot offhand and bounce soda cans around then a 1x red dot is ideal. If you prefer to sit at a bench with a bipod and shoot at paper then a magnified optic is better suited.

I got the 15-22 for shooting offhand and bouncing debris around the plinking range so I use a 1x red dot. If I had a magnified optic I'd spend more time trying to find the targets than shooting.

Suggestions? Primary Arms MicroDot and Bushnell TRS25 are very popular 1x red dot. Small, light, reliable and easy on the wallet. Perfect match for a small, light and reliable rifle. :D

Scopes

I wrestled with this "Reflex or Scope?) also. I'm a paper target tin/can shooter so I went scope. I have the UTG 3-9x32 Compact CQB Bug Buster (for 25yds.) for my 15-22 and the 3-12x44 Compact Swat (for 100 yds) for my RRA LAR-15 AR1251. I like them both, they hold zero well, and seem well made. Bought them both from Amazon. Oh yea, they look nice also.

This is what I ended up ordering^....I may get a red dot for the AK.

I have a 3-9 power Bushnell rimfire scope on my Ruger10/22 that's been awesome. My 10/22 is a tack driver within 100yds and a lot of that credit goes to the scope.

On my 15-22, I've gone from the factory iron to a Burris Fastfire 3 and now to a cheap-o reflex sight.

I was actually surprised with the iron sights and may end up going back to them. The burris Fastfire was pretty cool, and was visible in bright daylight. Unfortunately, the center reticle takes up about a 3-inch circle at 100yds and my groups weren't that good.

The reflex sight is fairly new and I haven't had time to try that yet. The one thing I like about those is the field of vision. There's no magnification, but it's easier to acquire a target through the sight.

The aforementioned UTG scope looks cool - that might be the next thing I try.

UTG

here it is, out of the box from Amazon.

Here it is mounted. I don't have a bore sight so I'll guess I'll wing it at the range on Saturday.

Can you give us your opinion on this scope after you took it to the range? I am interested in this scope as well. Looks like a lot of scope for the money. Any negative points?

Thanks

I really like this scope for the money. I mounted the scope with no bore sight and was very close the first shot. I'll see id I can get a pic or my paper target at 50 yards, I punched the center out nicely. I would not hesitate to buy this scope again...as a matter of fact I am thinking about trying it out on my Troy Carbine AR 15
