OK, I bought this revolver sight unseen. It's California, so I pick it up in 10 days. Wanted a big heavy duty .22LR revolver. Who can tell me all about this monstrosity?

Does it use the same grips as a 686 round butt?

I think they use the same grip but I know for certain my 4 inch version is a keeper. I really enjoy mine and it is one of those guns that I will have until the end.

Yes, the 617 can share grips with the 686 (unless you are buying one of the first 617 models, which I think were square butt). However, the 617 is a k-frame and the 686 is an L-frame, the other parts of the 686 being slightly beefier - the 686 being built to withstand constant .357 magnum loads.

Enjoy your 617 - I certainly enjoy mine!

My new 617 has the same square butt as my 20 year-old 686 .357. The 617 comes with a black synthetic grip, but you can buy a checkered wood square butt grip from S&W for it for about $80.

It sounds as though you didn't want to buy it?

It's a 3 pound, stainless, full underlug .22 - the recoil is vicious :).

We need photos of the monstrosity for further details - it may take square or round butt stocks depending on its vintage as noted above.

It is brand new not used, so round butt it is.

I've wanted one of these for a long time, but they are not often available around here.

Guess I'll look at some Hogue grips -- I like wood grips rather than rubber.

I have a 617-6, with the 10 round cylinder. It has been fine, and equal to my 17-4, pre 18, or my K22 outdoorsman in accuracy. This is pictured with an Burris FastFireIII, which has now been removed and mounted on my Russian bullseye pistol. I'm keeping my revolvers all with open sights.

IMHO, the 617s are one of the best all around revolvers for range fun. Every 617/ 17 I've ever owned ( over 10) has made me look like the expert shooter I want to be!

p.s. Yes, any K/L framed grip will fit as long as the butt profile is correct.

I have both a 4" and 6" 617-6. The longer one is a great target gun -- enough weight to practically hold itself still once on target. It was a great buy for me enough though I didn't get any kind of a "deal" on it. It's really a "must have" gun.

The 4" is a great training gun in terms of a service gun.

My 617-6, 4". Born 12/15/2015 and purchased online 01/02/2016.
Added the Hi-Viz 617 specific front sight, Kim Ahrend's round butt conversion Tactical, and Wilson 14# rebound spring. I like it, but it's a tank compared to the Colt Diamondback.

I'm thinking about getting a 617 with 6" barrel for target work. H Richard, does the Burris FastfireIII swap on and off easily with the open sights? I'm a little confused about the 617- x's. Are there different options besides bbl length and number of rounds in the cylinder in recent ones? This is a great thread and site. Thanks

love my 617-4 6 inch...
son and I enjoy breaking clay pigeons at 50 yards with it...
people next to us think we are crazy then we load the cylinder full and hand it to them... usually only takes 2 or 3 rounds for them to nail one...
truly impressive "plinker"

I have the 4 inch and it's a great shooter and shares the same grips as my 686 plus.

You wont be sorry
I somehow ended up with three 617's
I think I have two 17's as well
There are new ones, old ones and in-between ones
I like them all
I'm not sure how it happens, but they do tend to multiply
