While the SOD article is good, I would recommend that you never use steel wool on a stainless gun as small particles get stuck in micro grooves and will/can rust.

I have used the pads before and they work great. I used the green, lightly, and the grey, again lightly, for a final finish.

The technique I've used it with the grey or white scrub pads coated with a bit of mothers polish & try an stay with the grain of the original brushed finish, It makes them look factory IMO.. I cut the scotchbrite pads in 1"x 2" strips which is perfect for use with your fingers..
You can take a pretty banged up gun & make it look "almost" as new.. Deep dents & gouges won't be totaly removed but blended in..

ScotchBrite Stainless Steel Cleaner Pads

Try ScotchBrite Stainless Steel Cleaner refill pads. They come pre-moistened in sealed foil packs. I found them at WalMart, aisle 11, cleaning supplies. Cost $2.17.

Something I've used on the frosted stainless barrel rib and frame topstrap is Flitz and a nylon toothbrush. It cleans it up without polishing the frosting off. I re did a police turn in Model 66 some years ago but used 0000 steel wool and Flitz but although it turned out very well if I were to do another I would follow the advice on scotchbrite pads.

Every one I've seen done with Scotchbrite, looked like it was done with Scotchbrite. If it's a good gun, I'd send it into S&W and get it done right. If it's a beater, no problem.

Generally, Scotchbrite pads are more abrasive as the color gets darker. White called delicate or the light yellow made for glass stove tops would be all I would consider for a gun but many are comfortable using the more abrasive pads.

the gun is a p&r four inch 629. it has a little shiney rub on the muzzle from holster carry and a turn line, maybe i will just leave it alone.

The turn line will come back, but your kitchen scotchbrite pad (dry) will remove the blemish. Do not do the whole gun, use random pattern only on the blemish. This works on the matte finished guns.
