SD Myres and Early Ammo

Hey John,
Your welcome..I had thought I had emailed this info over the years...

Hey, DanM, I've never seen a Ruger flat top .44 mag converted to fast draw or made into a fix sighted gun. Can you post a picture of it? I've seen 357 converted guns and super modified single sixes before, though. Spangenberg's gun shop in Thombstone had a nickel sheriff's model flat top 44 Special for $650 a couple years ago. But a 44 is pretty cool especially if it's still got enough meat in the top strap for full loads. BTW. Your Duke holster is much cooler than the EPSaddelry ones 'cause I don't much like the rolled over lining, tho it's obviously more durable with constant use.

Wyatt,

I had never seen anyone convert a 44 Blackhawk either. Thats why when opoefc had this 1958-59 vintage flattop at a show a while back I decided to buy it. It was completely in parts in an old See's Candy box under Uncle Eds table and I decided to buy it and see what I could do to complete it. It had a High Spur Fast Draw Hammer that the Bolt Plunger is buggered up on so it wouldnt Cycle. I replaced the hammer with a Single Six Hammer and put it back together. I am pretty sure that It was made for a Wax bullet/Primer Shooting as there is no way you would get me to load it up with a Full strength 44 mag bullet. One of these days I will complete the project and take it out and give it a try. Maybe Ed can give us some more history?

Dave DuClos / S.D. Myers is now located in Sweetwater, Texas in the old S.D. Myers building on Oak Street.
I met him in Dallas in Sept. last year. Dave displayed many examples of his "Excellent" & "Quality-built" holsters! I ordered two and a money belt from him with an expected "3" week turn-around...I've spoken to him several times and he re-assured me several times they were "in the mail". When they arrive, I'll post pictures. I'll re-phrase that, "When" they arrive, expect pictures.

Thanks, Dan.I loaded a couple hundred blackpowder 44 Specials a long time ago for a John Gren 1860 Colt replica conversion he made. If i remember, 23 grns. black powder, 215 grn semi wadcutter with no filler. Shoots great and wouild be fun in your gun.

BTW. The reason I mentioned the topstrap before is they almost always look pretty weak. Are the notches/sears OK in the original hammer or broke? How much it cost you if you don't mind? A guy at work said his wife inherited a Ruger 44 mag. with a ten inch barrel. I asked him if the uncle owned it before 1971. He said yes so I knew it was a rare flattop. I told him it's worth maybe $1500 (looked ok in the picture). I said never ever sell it but if you do talk to me first. I'm not a Ruger expert so I thought my price quote was fair.

newly arrived holster's and money belt from "S.D. Myres" of Sweetwater, Texas...
They appear to be of excellent quality and workmanship... Dave picked out a particularly nice piece of "pebble-grain" for the belt! I'm very pleased....

Slim, I don't believe Dave DuClos has a website. He has been struggling with health issues thus, delivery times thus, committments. Reaching him via phone can be a challenge at times.
His address I believe, is;
S.D. Myers Saddle Company
Attn: Dave DuClos

I'd ordered my holsters directly from him at the Dallas Collector's Show in late Sept. 2008. They just now arrived 3-21-09.
Dave does fine work, is proud of it but handling the orders he receives seems to throw him into a quandry.

Howdy
When Dave Duclos had his shop in Maine he used to come up to the Bangor gun show. I bought a Duke rig from him. He did good work at the time but his estimate of 6 Wks turned to 6 Months I had just about given up on him them lo and behold It showed up.
The rig is well made and the holster looks just like yours. SD Myres El Paso imprint and all.
