I'm a wheelgun guy, so other than my 39-2 I have little experience with the autos.

My son was offered a SD40VE for $300. Would be another $25 for a NY transfer. Supposedly it was only fired 100x and it comes with "several 100" rounds of new factory ammo. Don't load that caliber so need to add dies, bullet mold, etc. to the cost.

A quick search came up with some not so good reviews. What do the experts say about this gun and the price?

I paid $319 new. Have had no issues with mine. The factory trigger pill is long (8 lbs) and takes some getting used to but it shoots well. The rounds that come with it make it even more attractive.

I'm sure, like most on here, will tell you. That sounds like a good deal. I have an SD40VE. The trigger takes some getting used to, heavy. Mine is between 8-9 pounds. It's no worse than most D/A revolver triggers. There are spring and trigger kits to fix it if you want. Mine is my EDC gun so I'm leaving it alone. There are no external safeties on it except the Glock style self defense trigger. Have had 0 issues with it no failures of any kind. After 1 yr and several hundred rounds it will do 10 round groups of 3 1/2" to 4" shooting 2 handed. Not great but enough for self defense. Most of that is me not the gun, shooting off sand bags it shoots where you aim it. I would say get it and enjoy.

This is a budget priced gun that can be had new from 299 to 400 new, depending on where you live and the market.
Down south....you can steal em.
I have no problem buying used. However, I'd be concerned about buying it used, at that price...sight unseen. With lots of new ammo...that makes it a good deal.
Tons of good reviews...they are a great gun for the price.

I have one and have not had any issues with it. No FTF, no FTE and no FTL. It cycles flawlessly and is as accurate as you are. I don't have any issues with the trigger myself. It's my EDC weapon. I have been contemplating a few mods but haven't committed to it yet. And you can't beat the price. Buy it and enjoy years of dependable service with routine maintenance.

Update: I recently purchased the Galloway guide rod with the 20# spring to add to mine and reduced recoil jump noticeably over a well broke in stock 17# spring. I'm still wrestling with the Apex trigger and spring kit though since it is my EDC firearm.

-Another lover of the SD40 VE here! The price is what you can find a new one for on sale, but the ammo that comes with it would be all bonus. Like some others, the trigger doesn't really affect me at all. I didn't grow up shooting 1911A1s, so the difference wasn't an issue. I'm also another one who will probably leave the stock springs in. This is one hungry pistol that eats ammo like no tomorrow. If your son can have someone check it our, or a written guarantee from the seller in case he finds something wrong with it, then I'd jump all over that deal!

Once Smith worked the initial problems out of the Sigma series they became as good as any of the other wonder pistols and the 100s of factory rounds make it a no brainier as far as a good deal goes. JMHO

All of the "true" reviews, gun magazines and knowledgeable folks not bubba on youtube, have been very positive for both the SD9VE and SD40VE. I own both and have been extremely impressed by their performance. I don't see anything wrong with the trigger and like it the way it is. I trust them to fire every time and they are very accurate even up to 30 yards off hand with good self defense ammo.

besides maybe polishing the feed ramp it should be good. mine has had thousands of rounds thru it and fires fine everytime

That's strange, I found nothing but positive reviews when I researched the SD9. In fact the reviews convinced me to buy the gun. With the exception of those who say "spend the extra $200 and get an M&P" I haven't seen any negative reviews. I'd ask you to post a link to one just out of curiosity, but it wouldn't make me like my SD9 any less.

Here's the kind of review I found when I went looking. Hope this helps.

most i read, bashed the trigger. alot of people dont like the trigger. oddly enough alot of them also love 1911's. this is no 1911 trigger thats for sure.

some bash the lack of a external safety, some dont like that its a cheap glock clone and they are glock fanboys.

there are a ton of bad reviews. i decided to come here and ask the owners of them, that convinced me to buy one

-That's one of the things I like about this trigger. It isn't light enough to cause an accidental discharge from being bumped into. The only way this pistol will fire is if your finger is actually on the trigger pressing it back. The safety is between your ears. Keep your finger off the trigger unless you are ready to send a round down range!!

the MA compliant SD has a 10.5 lb trigger. the "standard" and CA compliant models have a 8 lb trigger. mine has a crisp, clean 5.5 lb now

I'd be willing to bet 90% of those "not so good reviews" are reviews are from ppl that have never even touched the SD9VE. That's the problem with the Internet; anyone can sound like an expert while actually being utterly clueless.

It's a good gun. I'm impressed with it. In fact, I was impressed enough to buy one for around $315.00 -- when the last thing I needed was yet another 9mm.

Btw, my trigger is stock and I don't plan on changing it out. I'm quite happy with it.

Yeah, it seems every forum in every corner of the Internet with a post regarding a gun and it's price will invariably have that one guy who feels he has to recommend spending another $100.00 for the _______ gun.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of dropping 25hundred on a new custom Dan Wesson 1911 because....

"OMGZ NOES, JESS SPEND ANUTHUR $100 or TOO AN GET TEH GURMAN MOUSER WITH A FLUX CAPICTOR"
