There are several very well informed and detailed posts on this general subject. I think they are in several threads.

Like SamMeow says; Sd and SDVE mags are the same. Matter of fact, you can also use SWVE mags in a SD/SDVE. Only difference is the base plate is not correct for the grip. Feels a little funny, but works just fine.
The SD series of pistols are an evolution of the original SW series of guns, truth be told. With more modern features and a much improved and updated lock work setup. A couple of other things you might not be aware of: A SD pistol will fit perfectly into any M&P holster, due to an almost mirror image frame and slide contour. And any M&P sights will fit the SD pistols. S&W designed it that way.
I do like SD's, Nice, easy to use pistol.
