Howdy, I'm a fairly new gun owner and I'm already hooked. My first gun purchase was a SD9VE I bought new a year ago and carry it everyday. I live fire target practice about once a month and practice drawing and dry firing once a week. The reason for my post is two questions...

1. What modifications to my gun are recommended to improve it's performance and accuracy?

2. I have 2 main holsters I use. I have a OWB kydex holster with a pushbutton release. It clips over my belt but the weight of my SD9 in that holster is always pulling my pants down so I'm always hitching my pants up regardless of how much I tighten my belt. I look like an old gang banger! The one I use most often is a simple leather holster by Versacarry but there's nothing really holding my gun in place in the holster. It feel out once and clanged on the floor in a public restroom stall. I don't mind people knowing I'm carrying but I don't wanna advertise it in a restroom! Recommendations for a holster that won't de-pants me on the street and will keep my weapon securely holstered?

Thanks!

Mike

1. Get a good carry belt. I recommend the "Tactical" gun belt from Kore Essentials. Reasonably priced and it should hold your pants up, once cinched down.

2. I like hybrid holsters for mine. Something like a Desantis, Cross Breed, Alien Gear, etc...

3. I've only polished the trigger bar on mine and shot a couple thousand rounds through it with some dry fire as well. Trigger is on par with my newly acquired Shield 9mm 2.0.

A quality gun belt (read: thick leather) will do wonders. When I switched to one, it was like night & day difference. (Midway has them on sale for about $40)

For me, IWB (at about 4:00) works best. You don’t need a pricy holster to get the job done well - I mean, avoid the crappy nylon ones, but it doesn’t have to be an expensive custom rig with a six-month wait to receive.

I use an “eBay special” kydex IWB with an adjustable screw for tension for my CZ 75 Compact (which weighs about 10oz more than your SD9VE) and I never have any issues with it. (cost - under $25)

Definitely a decent belt. I have both Bigfoot belts and good stiff leather. And I don’t use a holster that isn’t specifically for that firearm. Better retention and support.

When you say a holster specifically for that firearm, do you mean a holster that will fit only my SD9? There were 10 or so different firearms listed on the package that will fit in my holster.

You’ll probably figure out that plenty of practice (which it sounds like you’re doing) will gain you more than any modification you could make to your firearm.

As with most things, it’s more about the archer than the arrow.

Stay safe.

Do what the others said.
Stock up on ammo and practice!
This is what I did to my SD9;
Longer take down bar, Galloway Boudica trigger, Wesbaun spring kit, and polished the barrel feed ramp. My trigger pull is 4.75 lbs. and she's a real good tack driver!

With kydex especially, if it’s molded specifically for your model it’ll retain better.

A good belt - and look for a belt advertised for carrying - as noted above, Midway sells a nice one. I wear mine daily. Not knowing your skill level, what is your gun “not doing” that you believe it’s performance needs improving? Is it the gun or the shooter? Seriously, as recommended - practice as much as possible and buy ammo instead of gadgets for the gun. Buy a holster made for your gun - not one of these cheap “fits many” jobs that is not molded for your gun. Not knowing your size, and being a new shooter, I would not recommend any inside pants holsters. Likely, it will be uncomfortable in many situations and apparently you have already dropped your gun once… That is a bad deal and reflects poorly on all CCW individuals. I have carried over 40 years and never dropped my gun but I buy good holsters made for my guns. Do not knock the SD even as an entry level gun. I never warmed up to them but after firing a friend’s, I bought one. After an Apex trigger install (do not attempt this yourself as a new-be), it will out shoot my Glock.
