I just won a smith and wesson sdve handgun at a gun raffle. I have the choice between the 9mm and 40. I have a mini uzi 9mm, ruger p95 9mm, and a taurus 22 pistol already from my father in law. I am new to handguns and dont even shoot them yet. I have them in a safe. My question is what caliber should i buy? 9mm to go with my others or a 40 just to be different? any info about this gun?

It's hard to say since you have yet to get into shooting.

On one hand, yes it's easy to keep all the same caliber.

On the other, especially since it's free, it's a great chance to get a different caliber to try out when you do get into shooting.

If I were in your shoes, I'd go with the .40.

Personally, I love the .40S&W. But since you have other 9mm pistols, it would be more economical to get the 9mm. That way you're not buying different ammo. Then again maybe you'd want them .40 just for something different.

I started with a 9 (M&P) and bought a 40 to try something different. Although I like the 40 if I had to do it again, I would have bought another 9 in a different flavor.

I follow up much better with the 9 :D

I have the SD9VE and a 1911 45acp. I debated whether to get a SD40VE, but felt I had all my bases covered with those 2 calibers. Even if I were to purchase another handgun, it would be a M&P series, in either 9mm or 45acp. The 40 S&W just doesn't interest me....

i like the 40 s&w. but it looks like you got a bunch of 9 mm guns, so i would go with the 9. easy to stay with one caliber than many different cals.

If you're a non-shooter, .40 cal is a pretty demanding place to start. It is a good bit more violent. I'd start with something a bit more easily controllable. And 9mm is also a good bit more economical.

Get the 9mm, with the right SD ammo, you can get 9mm to perform pretty close to a 40 S&W load.

If it's just for range use I'd get the 9mm for sure.

Personally, I wouldn't commit to being a one round user before having the chance to try others.

You already have a couple of 9mms. Try the .40. Variety is the spice of life, or so they say.

.40 S&W is not a punishing round like some claim. Take it from a 60 something year old with arthritis.

Well I went with the .40 and am happy with the variety i have now. If i went with the 9mm then i would still wish i got the .40. Actually i really like the feel of this gun. I would not mind having a 9mm in it also. I am excited to try this. I got a box of generic ammo for it. Should i also get SD ammo?

I have the .40. Buy FMJ for practice. SD for defense. Mine likes just about anything I've tried except Fiocchi.

All but one of my semi-autos are in .40 caliber, the other is a .45 1911. My wife and I both CCW .40's. However it seems in my area everyone is dumping their .40's for 9mm. Which makes me wonder if 10 years from now am I gonna have problems finding/affording ammo. So my vote is to go with the 9mm. With it being used in the military I don't see it going out of production for a long time. Where as the .40 looks to be starting to fade out sort of like the 10mm did. Not trashing the 10mm, but they aren't near as popular as 15-20 years ago. Just my 2 cents. After posting I see he already made his choice.

I voted 9, but your choice.
No matter what, please get some proper firearm safety training.
You can learn proper grip, stance and site picture.
Won't hurt to learn your states laws on use of a firearm in self defense.
Now, get out there and enjoy yourself!

I say get the 9mm you can stop a bad guy just as easy with it if you learn to shoot it properly, the ammo cost less & the gun carries more in the mag.

I have the .40 Sigma.

My main reason for buying it was for home defense. The price and S&W name were key factors.

I live near Orlando, Fl and there are quite a few "Home Invasions" so I wanted a gun that would stop an intruder.

I figure the police would take any gun used in a shooting so I wanted a reliable gun that was accurate and dependable but not a big financial loss if I had to use it.

A few hours at the range proved it shoots well and does not fail. It's a good deal.

I have a Ruger SR9C and the S&W Sigma .40. The Ruger 9mm kick is less than the .40 but not by that much.

My son's Kimber .45 feels about the same as the Sigma .40.
